Can I turn a coloured Illustrator vector into a translucent icon?

Question

Hi,

I have a vector logo which is coloured (blue, black, gray, white) and I would like to convert it to a white/translucent image that could be used to watermark photos. For example the same way many TV channels have their regular coloured logo and an white/translucent version of it in the corner of the screen. Is there a way to convert the colours to different shades of white/transparent?

Sure, it's not detailed. Here is the logo, the one on the left is the original, the one on the right is the kind of effect i want, made by changing the transparency level in Illustrator. I put the black background in just so the white logo doesn't get lost.

(it wont let me upload a .ai file on here so it's on rapidshare: http://rapidshare.com/files/427461519/logos.ai

I've remade it in white, with each letter being a different shade of white/gray and exported as a PNG and then pasted it onto the photo in photoshop and reduces it's opacity which works to an extent.

I've also remade it in all white and then changed the opacity of each letter to different levels within Illustrator to make each letter look a different shade, but when I export as a png the transparency effect made in illustrator doesn't save. Is there any way around that, because having it all white and varying the transparency achieves the effect that I want better than the first method. I'm sure there is an easier way to do this that I don't know about.

... I hope that makes sense...
