PS3 tops over 41.5 million, Trails Xbox 360 by less than 3 million

Recommended Posts

Sony has released sales data for Q2 and in the results they post strong sales for the PlayStation brand, but sales for the PS3 in Sony's fiscal 2010 have been strong with sales close to 6 million as of the end of September. In other news, Sony's PS3 has also closed the gap in worldwide sales against Microsoft's Xbox 360.

WorldWide Sales:

Xbox 360: 44.5 million

Sony PS3: 41.6 million

While both figures are impressive, Sony has had a stronger 2010 than Microsoft with over 8.1 million PS3s sold compared to Microsoft's 5.8 million Xbox 360s. Microsoft currently has a strong grasp on sales in North America, but Sony is selling well in Japan, while PAL regions the race is still close. With Microsoft's release of Kinect in just a couple weeks, Microsoft should keep the lead if sales remain strong in North America; however, Sony has the release of Gran Turismo 5 to draw gamers in with. The holidays will spice things up and make it interesting to watch, but in the end it's the gamers that will win with great new software and releases.

Somethign doesn't add up. Every report has said the 360 has topped sales charts even beating the Wii third quarter. yet somehow the PS3 closed the gap... does not compute.

If you noticed the source for the article AB posted for the figures for Sony, it's a neogaf forum from a neogaf poster. As of October 1, it was 39.2 million PS3s:

And the poster on Neogaf is getting his numbers straight from Sony's Q2 results...

Some comments on Eurogamer suggesting they missed out the Q1 numbers from the total.

Well I still have mine and don't really give a monkeys on who has sold the most lol :D

True dat, as do I. But these are just forum posts for the sake of conversation. It's like watching the Camaro vs. Mustang sales comparison threads on auto forums.

Could be true! I have no idea, as I have no idea what the numbers are.

But are the numbers, PS3s sold to stores or endusers?

It's numbers from Sony it's probably the former.

Also, who gives a crap who's sold more anyway?

Publishers and investors ...

Good for Sony. ?If they don't do better with the OS on the next PS I won't invest in their console again. Playing with friends is more a hassle than a pleasure.

Its only a matter of time before the PS3 surpasses the X360. I bet it will be this Christmas.

that would require gt5 to actually be released before xmas

Oh, I see, so it is true that England is the 51st state then

btw guess where for three consecutive weeks (could be more but that's what it was last I heard which was a few weeks ago) the 360 outsold even the money factory a.k.a Wii

These figures are rubbish anyway. The only reason Xbox has sold more is because they break more often and people need to keep buying new ones.

Ah, more 2007 FUD, how unexpected, surprised it took this long though.

Nah, won't be this christmas.. maybe next christmas. MS has the 360 S 4gb for 199 which will be hard to beat and kinnect will be making some big noise.

If it's a 5 million difference in 5 years, it will take more than just next year. Especially this past year as the 360 has outsold the PS3 every month in the US, and the Wii for the past 4 months.

Always knew the PS3 would catch up even with the head start the X360 had. I think after this Christmas the PS3 sales will surpass X360 easily...GT5 will play a HUGE role in that.
