New EF Zoom Lens?

Recommended Posts

Joni_78    49

I was thinking of selling my EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens and get a EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. Is this a good upgrade or would there be something better at the same price range like used L-series lens or something from Sigma or Tamron? I mainly shoot birds and would like to get some shots of birds flying but EF-S 55-250mm is really poor on that job.

Moonman's recommendations are good (especially if you also get a teleconverter) though they'll be significantly more expensive than the 70-300.

I'd also look into these:

Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM APO http://www.slrgear.c...uct/1184/cat/31

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM http://www.slrgear.c...oduct/77/cat/11

Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO http://www.slrgear.c...uct/1183/cat/31

It seems 400mm lenses are usually considered best for birding (I know that's true in Sony-land where the excellent 70-400 is said to shine at that).

Thanks, I need to rethink the 70-300, might be better to invest some extra and get Sigma or Canon 70-200 + teleconverter.

+1 on the 70-200. Any variation of the canon 70-200 is good. I think Sigma recently released a new 70-200 f2.8 OS. It's probably pretty good.
