spacey
Hi, I'm thinking of going to DSL which has a 20 gig limit. But they don't keep track for you, so its up to you. I have 3 computers connected to a router, so I'm wondering what is the best way to monitor only Internet traffic? I have DuMeter right now, but it monitors all traffic (Internet and LAN). I just want to monitor external traffic. Is there any program that can do this? Thx!

amoeba
Geh, just typed out a long message but wasn't logged in... The way I can see to do this would be to have one computer set as a proxy server, i.e. all internet data must go through that computer then to your router, then to your DSL modem and so on. This proxy server would have to have two network adapters. One for the internal link and one for the external. You would then get a monitoring util that lets you select what ethernet adapter to monitor usage/traffic on. Did I just make sense?
DigitalMad
We should be able to find a tool for routers that support SNMP. Here's an example: http://www.neon.com/CGwin.html
PlazzTT
You can set DU Meter to monitor Internet only.
Hikaru
Yeah.. just go to the Options and change the Network Interface to monitor from all interfaces to your internet connection only
spacey
plz elaborate guys. in the interfaces, i see 3 things. all interfaces, dialup and my 3com ethernet. even if i pick my 3com ethernet, i'm gonig to get traffic from moving files between my comptuers on my lan. say if i move around some movies, but i dont want that to count in the total bandwidth of internet... because both my lan and internet are going through the same network card right? i was hoping there was something IP based, so that anything in the 192.168.2.* range wouldn't count. i don't think you understood the situation. thx for the replies tho. AndyD
RAS GS --- Why? Cause it's free! :) In my neverending search to find free replacements for the software I use, I ran into this little program that someone created over at FlashFXP.com Keeps track of your weekly, monthly, yearly bandwidth usuage. It does not give info on a specific program/port being used but I'm sure you will know what really maximizes your bandwidth anyway. Unfortunately, my company's firewall is blocking FlashFXP's forum so I can't give you a direct link but I'm pretty sure it's in the freeware section. Edit: just read one of your above replies...not sure if this program will differnetiate between internal and external traffic. Can't hurt to try it out though :)
