3D sound, 7.1 channels?

What's the point? It's a portable.

Specs don't mean anything to me, if it's got a load of crap like Fifa 2005 PSP then they can kiss my ass.

Ah, I love my GBA SP. And you know why? 2D Gaming. I find 2D gaming so much more addictive that 3D gaming (so in other words, 2D is perfect for a long train ride or plane ride). Also, I don't really like Playstation at all. The only game I really appreciated on it was FF7, and I don't want to see a sequel to that. Loved it as it is. Square always seems to **** up on sequels. Look at Chrono Cross. :hmmm:

Personally, you can get your expensive little PSP. I'll keep my loveable GBA, and follow Game Boy if it stays in its 2D goodness.

So who wants to tell him FF games are releasing on GBA right now?

As for the main topic. Game Boy has outlasted many, more powerful, machines.

There are most likely four reasons for that:

  • Price
  • Game selection
  • BATTERY LIFE (most of the rest were terrible here)
  • Brand recognition

Now, for sure Sony has one of those right out of the gate in the brand recognition. The question is can they make something that much more powerful, that is cheap, with lots of games, AND have it not eat batteries for dessert?

I think there are a couple of different issues here.

First - Will the PSP be good? Well its from Sony, and carries the PlayStation name. They have a LOT riding on that name alone, so my guess is yes.

Second - Will it topple the GBA? The GBA empire is HUGE. I mean HUGE. Part of the reason for its success is that its had 10 years to build a library and is CHEAP. The PSP will not be able to compete price-wise with the specs they are listing. My guess is that it will be at least twice as expensive ($199) as the GBA-SP. This alone will hurt sales. GBA has a BIG thing going for it and thats KIDS. While there aren't many parents or little kids here on Neowin, a LOT of parents have bought their children GBA's to pass the time in car trips etc. ITs a GREAT inexpensive way to keep your kid entertained for hours. Even if on the EXTREMELY rare chance that it comes out at $99, the PSP will still not have the library and mass numbers that the GBA does. At that point it will still ikely take YEARS for it to gain a hand-hold that even begins to threaten Nintendo's GBA. By that point both will most likely be in their next iteration I am guessing.

It doesn't necessarily matter what system is better. It comes down to consumer appeal (just like everything on the market). MANY "better" hand-held systems have come and gone (TG-Express, Game Gear, Lynx, NeoGeo Poket and more). A LOT had color screens in the day when GB was black & white. They still didn't TOUCH sales. Why? The GB was $50-$60 and the games were under $20. The TG-Express was $399 if I remember correctly, like-wise the Game Gear and Lynx were quite expensive too (plus Lynx had suck games for the most part). NeoGeo pocket mighta been something, but it was never given the chance to bloom (plus NeoGeo games don't have the long lasting power that Nintendo games do I feel). The poor WonderSwan never had a chance either!

Last thing that Nintendo has working for it. CHARACTER power. How many GB variants have been sold by Mario, Metroid, Zelda, MegaMan, Contra, Castlevania, etc. There are just some GREAT games out there for the GB systems. I (and my wife) have probably played the Mario games the longest of anything. As much fun as I have w/ other games, the Mario Advance games keep pulling me back b/c they have pretty much infinite replay value.

Anyways, thats my 2 cents...
