Got WP7 - Neowin wants to hear from you!

I thought you don't have to do this?

When I first got my phone, 3G wasn't working (as I had to wait for it to be activated or something); due to that, I couldn't link my Windows Live account - I kept seeing an error message - so I just clicked 'skip' (or whatever the option was) and my phone worked fine.

As Owen points out, you can do it, but you won't be able to download apps, or listen to Zune Pass music, or access Xbox Live, so it's not really a viable solution for any of us, if only for the apps.

On another note, putting an Omnia 7 screen next to an iPhone 4 - iPhone 4 doesn't have anything to worry about. By far >___< The blacks aren't as deep, but on the whole, better brightness, much better pixel density, and everything looks perfectly sharp. Omnia 7 looks like a low res device next to an iPhone 4, which is a shame :[. And of course none of the devices feel as expensive or high quality as an iPhone 4, but they're still top end feeling mostly. But the part that makes me saddest really is the storage space - by Omnia 7 is down to less than a gig with only about 10 albums on it, about 5 videos, and a few games. Meanwhilst, my sister's iPhone 4 has about 30 games, 70 odd albums, and quite a few videos, and still has 17 GB left, which is very depressing. That's probably my biggest issue with the devices thus far.

Blergh, it's hard to feel like you have a top end, high spec phone when you put your phone directly next to an iPhone 4 - but ignoring the existence of that darned phone, they do feel pretty awesome. Just try not togloat too much in front of someone with an iPhone 4, everyone else is fair game rofl.gif

1) What device did you get? Samsung Focus

2) How long have you had it for? 1 Day

3) What are your top 3 features/'hits'? XBL, Zune Pass/Content & Performance! (its freakin fast!!)

4) What are your top 3 'misses'? Typing isn't consistent - some apps have the smart typing and special characters but others are different. Facebook Filtering needed. More Apps :)

5) Anything else you want to say? Blown away by performance and the AMOLED is amazing.

6) What app is your favo(u)rite so far? Netflix, Seesmic, Shazam, Zune

I really like the device. My wife with iphone 3gs is completely jealous :) Light, fast & feature rich!

They aren't making it as heavy of a part as Facebook. twitter is known to need updating far more often, thus draining the battery more.

Again, do you have anything to back this up? Facebook updates are downloaded when you enter the people hub, not in the background, why would Twitter differ?

Twitter updates are plaintext limited to 140 characters, facebook updates aren't... What are you basing this on?

Yeah, I see your frustration. I don't use this, so it doesn't bother me. It's a Version 1.0 product, I'd expect this in the next release.

That would be fine, were it not for the fact that MS are the author of both and EAS has done this for 6 years.

WP7 isn't just aimed at consumers, some corps such as Dell are replacing BES/Blackberry with WP7 handsets, am sure a few of those have more than one calendar ;-)

I just got an email today from clove telling me they won't be getting any dell venue pro's in till JANUARY! Woo is me I guess, but oh well, maybe when I get it the first big update to the OS will be out so I can install it first thing.

Still sucks.

AFAIK they've also told customers that the Dell won't have a micro-SD slot either? And it's only 8Gb?

Appears they're only selling the 8GB model at Clove, assuming there is actually a seperate model that comes with 16GB. But it does have a microSD slot - it's under the warranty sticker in the battery compartment through so removing it voids you're warranty. I know they don't people changing it but having to void your warranty is a bit much :p If they really didn't want us to change it, build the slot properly into the phone like the HTC Mozart, where users can't get at it.

I'm sure this will be an easy one to extend. I currently sync my calendars to my live calendar to get around this right now. No corporate calendar right now unless they want to pay for my phone :)

Could someone also possibly look into getting the neowin mobile site to render properly in IE mobile too please????

(Heh, you can see the colour banding on the neowin mobile site too, WP7 is not a fan of gradients )

Mobile site renders just fine. I was able to login and reply to some posts. The real site looks better than the mobile site on the focus :) MS is supposed to be refreshing the browser from IE9 later so it will only improve i'm sure. Not sure if the gradient is a limitation of the OS or the browser as apps don't seem to have the issue

Mostly just the fact that the mobile site should actually have more than one header item at the top :p (You can actually still click on them they just don't render)

Colour banding is an OS issue - it's just most apps don't use more than solid colours, in line with the rest of the phones UI, so you won't particularly notice it in some places. But you'll notice it in games, photos, and things with full screen colourful backgrounds. Annoying, considering these AMOLED screens look so vibrant, colour banding is actually more noticeable on them :p

The browser, for some reason, has terrible color banding issues. It's a known bug and MS has said they will fix it.

Alternatively theres a lovely tapatalk style app on the marketplace called "Board Express." And there's a free version of it too. Basically it's just an app for browsing forums.

It's not just the browser - colour banding is everywhere in the OS, if you can find enough colour to throw at it. Just a part of the OS it seems for now! Microsoft also suggest that you don't use gradient in your applications, because, well, they'll colour band :p

There's no way it seems, application developers can't make applications that add browser favourites so there's no hope there, and there's no built in support, so that's a no for now.

Not exactly true, they can make an app that syncs bookmarks, but it can't directly effect the booksmarks button in IE. One could quite make an application that syncs to a server with your bookmarks. Instead of clicking on IE to get to your bookmarks, you would simply click on the bookmark app. Also, is the Color banding issue a software or a hardware problem? In other words, can it be fixed as an update?

Didn't MS have a online bookmarking service for Live? I remember using it long ago but it seems they either pulled it or hid it somewhere. It basically loads all your current IE , or other browser, bookmarks up to live so you can access them from anywhere. It doesn't sync though, but if you don't change bookmarks often or just want to keep your most used ones handy that seemed to work well.

Ya, that should be it if I remember right.

You used to just go to favorites.live.com and it'd be there, but It seems like they finally killed it.

I have a copy of my favorites folder from IE8 stored up on my skydrive though, which works but it doesn't sync it or anything.

1) What device did you get? Samsung Focus

2) How long have you had it for? 4 days

3) What are your top 3 features/'hits'? Takes less clicks to get where I want to, Active Tiles, Xbox Live integration

4) What are your top 3 'misses'? Nothing really major, I suppose the upcoming patch for cut/paste will be nice.

5) Anything else you want to say? I went from an iPhone 3GS to a Samsung Captivate to this phone and I feel like this one scratches my itch better than the other two. I don't want a unique app for every task and web site I visit and it really does take less steps to get to the stuff I want. It's stable, fast and has nice software for media mgmt.

6) What app is your favo(u)rite so far? The people hub with FB integration, Zune and Xbox Live.

I have to assume a new version of this is coming as Windows Live Mesh has an option for syncing bookmarks, in fact that was the reason I set it up, hoping they would just sync to my phone.

I have a problem that stops me from using the new Live Mesh though I would love to but the damn thing uses the Live ID Sign-in assisstant which screws with my WD TV live being able to access my network shares etc. The real kicker is that if you install WLM 2011 or basically anything from the new WLE pack the installer also installs that damn thing again as well so now I can't even use WLM anymore.

I'm using Pidgen for access to WLM though, but as for a replacement to Live Sync/Mesh I don't know of anything.

Day 3 and I still can't get enough. Enjoying some Ustream content today via their WP7 app. Probably 10+ hours of zune music over the past 2 days as well ;) Only "crash" i've had is the marketplace getting stuck - anyone else have this happen? I'm not sure if it was my wireless router messing up so i tweaked some settings there as well since my router seemed to have issues dropping down to slow speeds (happened prior to wp7 so its not a result of this phone..)

Just too add a bit more of my experiences to this: I think Microsoft have missed some great opportunities here.

I'm going to start with Office:

 • You can't upload or download documents to Office Live skydrive. It's probably got far more use to the majority of users than Sharepoint integration, and a good way to everyday users to get documents too and from their phone, yet there's no mention of it at all.
 • You can't use the phone as a powerpoint remote, or view you're speaker notes on it whilst you're broadcasting a show on your PC.
 • Probably the thing I think would have been the coolest, and very useful : Local document sharing. Say I walked into a meeting with my team, I'd like to be able to just sit down, pull out my phone, and just press a button and quickly beam them over say a word document or a presentation to their phone via bluetooth. It's be amazingly useful - infact this very scenario would have been useful during my University project today - our team had a meeting, and many of us actually have WP7 devices (Student loan's being put to good use ;)), and I had a word document I'd just put the final touches on. But instead of just being a press a button and show it with everyone, I had to hand my phone around for people to see (I could have printed or emailed it to them, but those weren't ideal scenarios). A great missed opportunity. In fact, there's basically no support for local content sharing anywhere on the phone - not even sending photos over Bluetooth!

Heck, Office on the device is actually a dissapointment. It feels like they just ported over the Windows Mobile 6.5 office and basically made little to no changes - other than making it actually slower to format text and such (to fit in with the WP7 UI). Add to that the lack of Copy & Paste, and WM6.5's office is actually probably better >.<

Microsoft has a whole wealth of innovative technologies and cool projects, yet very few of them are available on the phone. It should really be a portable celebration of everything Microsoft, but instead we get a questionably implementation of Office & Xbox Live, with a cut down Zune player on the side, and some basic Windows Live integration. Messengers not there, Skydrives not really there, no XPS, no integration os some of their cool research projects like Photosynth or panoramic stitching (granted, they're processor intensive, but they'd be nice). I'd like to see some of the Microsoft Research groups bringing their work down and giving us some cool unique projects to play with.

I think, the core WP7 team have done a respectable job - but it would have been amazing if the rest of Microsoft's groups had pitched in and represented their own technologies on the phone. Feels like it's just the services and technologies that were part of and close too the core WP7 team in the EAD that are part of it (notably Zune & Xbox Live), and everyone else is just under represented or not there. I do hope the rest of Microsoft start supporting it, because it would give WP7 a massive advantage.

And one final bone to pick whilst I'm here - with the games hub. You can tell from the preview videos that the games hub was one of the last things to be finished on the phone, even as close as two months ago their were previews with the games hub basically not functioning - and what we have now doesn't feel finished. Friend requests & spotlight news articles aren't display in the hub. You click on them, and it throws you out the mobile xbox live site, they're not integrated as part of the phone. And the Xbox Live extra's really should have been part of the hub too - or at least written as a native application. Why they've written it as an XNA app is beyond me - maybe it wasn't made by the core team, and the core team hadn't made proper tools for other teams to work with native code with? Maybe they thought it'd be easier to do the 3D avatars in silverlight. Either way, the app has general bad performance, and it's very slow at updating. Hopefully they'll be able to make the games hub a far more awesome experience later on down the line - at the moment it really does feel unfinished. Plus, it'd be nice to have another way to browse you're installed games. They're all displayed with the large tiles, and I have about 30-40 installed (mostly trials :L), and thing's aren't exactly great.

It might sound like I'm complaining, but in really, I just want Windows Phone 7 to be the best it possibly can be! I very much like my phone at the moment, and it's very much usable, but there's definitely a lot of scope for improvement. And considering those improvements are going to be free, I have no qualms with having invested early. It's excellent hardware (albeit not the best), with an operating system that has flashes of sheer brilliance. Certainly, how Microsoft handle the next few months with their updates will likely make of break WP7.
