How wide should my web pages be?

Question

Hi everyone here. I got a couple of web templates to use to make a website and they seem skinnier than other websites. I was wondering how wide you guys recommended I make my websites. I want them to be able to be seen in various screen sizes and everything. I never made a website before so I'm kind of starting from the beginning lol.

Thanks everyone for all of your help. :)

It depends on the site design and user preference. Some users can't stand fixed width sites (I'm one of them), others can't stand fluid width sites.

Design with 1024x768 as a minimum though, and then check to see how it looked on larger displays.

A 960px grid system is still pretty common. I usually go with 1000px sometimes though. Otherwise if that still feels too 'small' for you then you can always opt for something more fluid. :)

Thank you very much. I was trying to make it fluid but it kinda didn't go so well. I will keep trying to do that but I wasn't sure what I should start with as far as seeing how much content I can fit on the page. I will try 960. The templates I got are set at 778. I'm not sure what that is. It seems like a weird number, and quite small compared to 960.

I'm really trying to do this right with the limited skills I do have lol.

Thanks. :)

778 is probably to cater for 800x600 resolutions.

It depends on what your audience is. A PC gamer audience is going to have a larger 1680x1050 proportion than an audience of "I don't know much about computers" types. Similarly, it'd be daft to design a website for 1680x1050 resolutions if your main audience will be using portable devices to view it.

A 960px grid system is probably the safest option for general audience. It's still viewable on 1024 x 768 resolution, as well on larger wide-screen displays.
