Help with installing a new HD with winxp

Recommended Posts

I just got me a new 40 gig 7200 hd, however i cant install it :(

I set its jumpers to slave because i have to transfer things from my old hd, to my new. When i booted up winxp, it successfully installed my hd, but i cant see it in windows explorer, and the device is working properly. My friend said that you need fdisk, so i opened up command prompt and fdisk wasnt there. i made a boot disk in winxp, restarted only to see that fdisk wasnt there.

Can anyone please please help me in installing my hd on winxp?

Also, after everything is done, can i keep my hd still as slave? (if i remove my old hd)

thanks :)

You need to set it up in Windows..If you ever used a nt based computer before you should know how if not..here it goes Go in to Computer management under Admin tools then go down until you see Storage if it isn't expanded expand it by click on the plus sign-->then click on Disk management and you HDD should be Disk 1--> right click on the white next to where it says disk 1 in the gray box and click on Format.. if you want it as 1 big drive.. I recommed you format it as NTFS at 512 bytes a sector.. and that is it you will be able to see it under Explorer now.. any more question post a reply or pm me

i dont have the option to format..

onle properties/help/convert to basic disk/new volume under right click on the box to the left of the big box, and new volume/properties/help in the big box

It's a pain to install a new HD in XP once XP is already up and running... it usually installs it but it doesn't "Initialize" the drive that's why you can't see it in explorer. Just right click my computer and choose "Manage" then on the left.. go down to "Disk Management" and configure it there.. then it will be available in XP's Windows Explorer.

note: you might have to restart to see it work...

hope so :)

also, if i remove my old drive occasionally, and still keep my new one as slave, will i have to change the new ones jumpers to master when i use it only? or will it still be fine as slave even when there is no master?

you could remove the other HDD alongs as it is the one XP is loaded one. You dont have to have a master chained to it to work. However, you can not have another IDE device set to slave.

the only thing is if any apps look point there.. That and you might end up with phathom devices. other then that not really. unless you use it for a large disk to carry around data.
