Hispanic82023
For some reason, system restore doesn't let me create a restore point. When I try to create one it says "System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer, and then run System Restore again." I proceed to restart it but it still doesn't work. I resorted to turning off system restore and then turning it back on again. It would then let me create a restore point.. but I would restart the computer again and try to create another restore point just to check and I get the same error. Turning it off and on fixes the problem until I reboot.... I have plenty of space on my hd. I also have the disk space setting at an appropriate level. Any suggestions? Could it be a specific service.. Event Viewer shows no errors whatsoever.. i'm clueless.

Hispanic82023
True, the system does lag.. but it's the principle... It annoys so much when something doesn't work. It always worked fine until a few days ago when I tried to create a restore point. I suspect that it could be a certain program or corrupt registry or something. I tried doing a repair (not clean) install of Windows XP last night to see if that would fix the problem. It always did in the past for other problems. Anyway, it still wouldn't function normally. The service was set on automatic and was started. It even said monitoring... but when I updated drivers it wouldn't say "creating a restore point or whatever" to revert to the older drivers. It also wouldn't let me create a restore point manually because I get the error described in my first post. I went as far as deleting the specific registry settings associated with system restore and did another repair install to no avail! Oh well. I just have system restore completely disabled now. Everything else seems to work with no problems.
Toxikk Veteran Posted January 3, 2002 Veteran Share Posted January 3, 2002 i know how to see hidden files, but still do not see this dir: C:System Volume Information you sure that is what it is called?
Hispanic82023
For Winxp that should be it, for Winme it is different. Make sure you have "hide protected operating system files" unchecked too.

stinkbait
I just realized that my machine is doing the same thing. I tried to use it before playing with some video card drivers. Just a shot in the dark, but the only recent change to my setup was the new XP security patch. Could that have screwed something?
Stingray
System Restore exists for one reason only: to be turned off.

PM5K
System restore can be a valuable tool, however it still needs some work because I have had similar problems in the past. I haven't gotten them with XP, but when I tried the horrendous os Windows ME, I had the exact same issues.
johnnIE
I won't trust system restore after it failed miserably when I really needed it, and ended up with a totally screwed up XP installation. Then I installed Roxio GoBack, and it's brilliant... it's now a must have in XP as far as I'm concerned if u have the HD space to spare - check it out! ;)
Richie101
To those people who can not get system restore to work Are you using an Abit board or a Highpoint controller?
Hispanic82023
I have a soyo 6ba+100 with highpoint 370 raid controller. I've always been using drivers 2.0.1019. They always worked great. I did briefly upgrade to the latest drivers (2.3), but downgraded because of downgraded performance.

J5PC
Is GoBack now XP compatible? Previously, it was not recommended for XP.
Richie101
The new Highpoint drivers disable the system restore function If you are using the new drivers, first disable system restore reboot, then re-enable system restore and it will work. Yes the latest version of goback works perfectly with xp
johnnIE
Is GoBack now XP compatible? Yes, v 3.1 now is totally compatible, and for me it works like a dream.

Yes the latest version of goback works perfectly with xp Even so, I went back to the previous drivers 2.1019 and I still get the system restore problems which I never had before. Your suggesting of desabling system restore, rebooting, and re-enabling it works until you reboot the machine again. Is there something still in the registry relating to the v2.3 high point drivers that are affecting system restore?
Richie101
after removing the 2.3 drivers the system restore is working fine I have rebooted several times and it is still working I'm sorry I can't help you
Hispanic82023
Okay.. so you can confirm that the v2.3 drivers affect system restore, right...Which drivers did you go back to? And how did you go about removing the new ones?
Richie101
It is definitely the drivers that are causing the problem under device manager, right click on the highpoint controller....click on properties....go to driver tab......click on uninstall driver I am using the 2.0.1203 drivers with no problems at all
