After 3 years we've outgrown our current virtual dedicated server. GoDaddy is our host, their service has been fine, but we were warned that memory usage was frequently reaching beyond what GoDaddy had given us. As the contract was close to ending, instead of renewing the old server, we purchased a new virtual server that provides much more memory and storage for a little bit less money. The new server runs CentOS, the old one runs Fedora Core 7, but I don't think anything we use it for requires any specific features of Fedora. The Web site had originally been set up by a very technical person who has since moved on and thus it falls to me to do the migration.
Because this is a virtual dedicated server, GoDaddy won't help us with the migration without paying a fee that I would like to avoid having to pay. Of course I'd like to cause as little disruption as possible. The Web site is not highly trafficed, but employees use E-mail hosted on this system during business hours 5 days a week. Therefore this at least the E-mail and DNS records migration needs to occur on a weekend or other off day.
I can SSH in to both servers without any problems and log on as root if needed. I know I need to FTP the /var/www/vhosts/mydomain.com/httpdocs directory over from the old server to the new. We do have a handful of MySQL databases besides those provided by GoDaddy for the Plesk control panel. I've already done a mysqldump of those databases to .sql files so they can be ready to go at a moment's notice.
I do most of my daily work on the server through the Plesk control panel: creating E-mail accounts, managing mailing lists. I FTP via a desktop FTP client to work on the Web site.
The problem is that I don't know what else needs to be done. I can create the domain through Plesk easily enough, and if necessary I could create everything else such as E-mail accounts and mailing losts by hand too. I'm not terribly familiar with the system as GoDaddy has set it up for us. In terms of software the Fedora server uses qmail for SMTP, Courier-mail for POP/IMAP, mailman for mailing lists and of course Apache, MySQL and PHP for the Web site itself. Besides FTPing over the httpsdocs directory, and the .sql files to recreate the databases, I'm not sure what files to migrate.
How should I move the IMAP mailboxes to the new server? How do I move the mailman mailing lists? Do I really need to recreate those accounts by hand in Plesk?
The last thing seems to me to be to login to Network Solutions, who controls the domain name, to update the DNS records to point to the new server.
The old server expires in 2 weeks so I need to have a plan to do this migration quickly.
