The Mysterious Firewall in WindowsXP Pro

Recommended Posts

I've heard from a bunch of people that WinXP Pro comes with a built-in firewall. If so, where are the configurations? I currently use ZoneAlarm Pro and I think that could be a reason to my slow shutdowns, so I want to use the XP built-in firewall. Problem is, WHERE IS IT?!

Anyone with advice/instructions!?

If you are on cable, go to Control Panel > Network Connections, choose your Internet Connection and click Properties.

Click on the Advanced tab and you will be able to turn on the firewall from there. Then click on the Settings button to customise the firewall to suit you.

I find that Norton Firewall is a lot better then ZAP and the Built in XP firewall.

And plus configured correctly it rocks and my shutdown start up speeds are still under 45 secounds

Here's what the Cableguy has to say :)....

Is the XP Firewall any good?

Yes, it's very good.

In comparison, it is very similar in configurability and functionality to BlackIce, but seems to be a step up in the security level.

It is not so good once you need to create rules for some applications or external users to gain access from the web. Its configuration only allows for the opening of ports rather than say, IP addresses, and this means that anyone with the required skill can use the same port to access your PC.

Aftermarket firewalls tried so far -

No goes - Norton Personal Firewall V 3.0 & ZoneAlarm 2.6

Goes - Latest Zonealarm & Zonealarm Pro 2.6.231, Norton Personal Firewall V 2.5 with logging disabled (run in Windows 2000 compatibility mode), Sygate Personal Firewall 4.2, Tiny's Personal Firewall.

Yeah Tiny and Zone Alarm appear to be two small and pretty useful firewalls, certainly for standard home users those or the XP firewall should do the trick.

I have used Zone Alarm Pro and thought it was ok. Caused problem for me tho. Since I am on PPPoE ADSL, my ISP disc me every 24 hours. When using Zone Alarm Pro, after I get disc I can't reconnect unless I reboot. I am sure there is a way or setting to play with within, but I was a bit lazy that day and just uninstalled it.

And now, I am using Norton Personal Firewall 2002. It's pretty good I guess. It caught a lot of intrusions attempts or remote comp trying to gain unauthorized access, etc.

Now a lil question. How come I never received any similar msg with Zone Alarm Pro? I get warnings from Norton Personal Firewall 2002 a couple times a day.
