Phone 7 limitations after a week of use

Hi,

as an european early adopter (having the HTC Mozart) I was well aware of some limitations by this release 1.0. nevertheless, I came across two troubling issues with the otherwise very nice looking mail application.

the first issue is, it does not seem to be able to do a server wide search for (old) emails (gmail account) as I was able on the iphone. it does only search in the emails specified to download (e.g. 7 days back)

the second issue, more troubling imo, it does not appear to handle picture attachments well. I receive emails from iphone users that have embedded pictures into the email. when I receive the email, the client says that it has e.g. 10 attachments but when I click on it, the pictures or attachments do not show up. I was able to reproduce that with my iphone. embedded pictures do not show up, attached pictures do.

the other issues might affect some european countries only, nevertheless, this what I found:

bing navigation, local search results etc are not available in quite a lot of countries. actually, the whole bing experience is crippled to a very extreme light version. i can imagine that anyone not being aware of the reasons will refuse this OS and never give it a chance again. just thinking that its crap. if you need details about the limitations just tell me.

further, I was not able to search for pictures using bing. i mean is this the same in the US version? that would be awkward....

anyways, I kinda like the OS and I will continue using it but i must admit, some of the limitations are extreme. sometimes the holiday season should not justify every decision made.

oh and btw - 99% of the apps in the marketplace are (for the moment) utterly crap hehe :-)

cheers

Known issue / limitation. Server wide searches aren't supported yet.

Bing in America is pretty much as full featured as Google maps, but worldwide it varies depending on which country you are in.

Though I'm pretty sure Google will get their maps application on WP7 as well so just wait I guess.

Eh depends on what you're looking for, I've seen some pretty neat applications...though most of them are paid.

To be fair, Android was like this. Come to think of it, it still is. It's just that that 1% of good apps grows as the market grows in general. The problem with Android was finding that 1%. Hopefully, WP7 doesn't have the same problem.

App wise i'd hardly call WP7 lacking. Some issues with 1.0 releases being a little rough around the edges but be honest.. what other launch of any other phone had all of these apps out the door and working? :) Netflix alone works better than the iphone version and no such thing on android yet hehe

btw is the marketplace different for each country/region or the same for anyone? I was looking for some apps I found in the web but couldnt find them in the marketplace.

I think there are some quirks with searching the marketplace with generic terms. I just knew the top 10-15 apps i was looking for and they had all but 1 available.

Samsung Focus came with ear buds that have volume control and mic. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality for a freebie in the kit.

When a developer submits their app they can specify the regions that it is available in (Important if, for example, it isn't localized in all regions, or there's a legal issue). So, some apps may not be available in all regions.

is this navigation more than just google maps? because google maps work pretty much all over the world

Ya, though I haven't used it personally what they mean is turn by turn nav using google maps. In lots of parts of the world when you wonder away from any major city google maps images are hella old and dated. If the images are old one could only wonder if any of the other information is old as well.

I wonder, havent you guys received emails from iphone users and could not see their embedded pictures?

i noticed 2 things:

1. I copy a picture from the iphone picture section, open a new email and paste it into the mail. => I receive the email on my phone 7 with an attachment inside that I can download and view

2. I select one or more pictures from the pictures section in the iphone and select them to send as an email => I receive the email on my phone 7 showing that there are attachments, but clicking on them does not download/show anything

I am able to reproduce it. do you experience the same?

my only workaround so far: i browse to gmail.com and open the email there
