Core Design Loses Lara Croft

Eidos announces that its next Tomb Raider game will be developed at its US-based Crystal Dynamics studio.

In a press release concerning the recent release of Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness and the fact that all but 500,000 copies of the game were shipped in Eidos' last financial year, the publisher has today announced that development of the Tomb Raider franchise is to be transferred to it Crystal Dynamics studio in the US. The next Tomb Raider game is currently scheduled for release during the financial year ending June 30, 2005 and, in light of today's announcement, Eidos has stated that it will be evaluating the Core Design studio's ongoing direction and contribution as part of the group's overall development capabilities.

Apparently Eidos hated what Core put together

I thought Gex ruled (Y)

Then again, that game was designed/made a loooong time ago. Crystal Dynamics might have improved with time (hopefully), or deteriorated due to lack of any big deals (i.e. this Tomb Raider thing might be a good thing for them and spur them on to create a masterpiece!)

I don't actually like Tomb Raider very much (I feel it's a bit overdone by now), but it's sad to see that Eidos doesn't trust Core anymore. Core is a great developer and they were their own publishers at least up to 1994 (not sure when they were bought by Eidos).

Core is responsible for developing and publishing many games that became instant classics, some of the best titles include Premiere, Chuck Rock, Bubba n Stix, the Heimdall series and Jaguar XJ220.

I've never heard of Crystal Dynamics before (though I have heard of Gex) but I do know they're not as experienced as Core Design's development teams. With so many classics on Core's release list, Crystal Dynamics just can't hope to compete, at least not on the first try. With time, perhaps, but time is obviously something Eidos doesn't want to give to Core to improve on Tomb Raider, so it's unlikely they will give the required time to Crystal Dynamics...

Crystal Designs did the Soul Reaver games as well. They're not bad at all.

Now core has made some wonderful games in the past, as did Psygnosis when they joined with Eidos, but the good old days of Eidos are long gone, CD may very well be the best team they have outside of Ion Storm.

I like and got hooked on Tomb Raider II. Adventures of Lara Croft was ok, but The Last Revelation was nice since she actually did some "Tomb" raiding in that game. Chronicles was a waste and Angel of Darkness is a dissapointment so let's hope this change helps the series.

Actually they did the sequels, Silicon Knights did the original and sued Eidos when they gave the sequel to CD. They smartly decided to just give Eidos the series and get on with their lives, instead of fighting a VERY long court battle.

You sure?

I thought Sillicon Knights did Legacy of Kain only, and Crystal Dynamics did all the Soul Reavers.

They did do LoK.

But they're part of the same series. That's why I said SK did the original.

Ahh I see what you're meaning there. I was looking at them differently even though Kain is in both of them since they were different styles. LOK was better.

I picked up Soul Reaver 2 about a month and a half ago, I like it. It's fun, and it runs very smoothly on my system. Only porblem I had with it is a graphics problem I was able to solve by going into the registry and disabling vertex shaders. Other then that it was a great game.

The Tomb Raider series is another story altogether though...
