An American in England

Recommended Posts

An American visiting in England asked at the hotel for the

elevator.

The portiere looked a bit confused but smiled when he

realized what the man wanted.

"You must mean the lift," he said.

"No," the American responded. "If I ask for the elevator I

mean the elevator."

"Well," the portiere answered, "over here we call them lifts".

"Now you listen", the American said rather irritated,

"someone in America invented the elevator."

"Oh, right you are sir," the portiere said in a polite tone,

"but someone here in England invented the language."

Although the english language was derived from various foreign lanugages originally for modern english, it was nonetheless originally used and therefore invented in England.

Technically, "English" never existed before the printing press was invented and used to create a national dictionary Until that point words were spelled and said differently all over England. This was done in the UK, so I guess we did invent English :)

Um, who owns copyright on it? ;)

Yup, but Latin is NOT English. English is NOT Latin. English may have been derived from Latin, Norse, and a great many others, but it is still a single language by itself, and so Invented In England
