First web design, what do you think?

Question

Hey I am very very new to web design / programming.

But I have created a website for my band and at the moment it's just a preview video so I was trying to make it incredibly simple for what it needs to be at the moment, I was wondering if i could get any tips on how to expand it or if the color scheme sits ok or if too simple is a bad thing, anything really would be greatly appreciated :)

My belief on band websites in particular are they are often really odd or just over the top so i think when I slowly expand my site (as i learn more about web design) I will try and keep it sweet and simple.

Once again I am a nub at this so don't be too harsh :p

Heres my site

here

cheers.

As far as simplicity goes, you've got it nailed down. :)

Not sure if I'm fond of the purple to be honest, but that's a personal preference.

Would this be an entrance page, or have you factored in things such as a navigation bar for future updates?

I'd also probably make the copyright text smaller. It's normally a given, so it doesn't need to show as prominently, it just needs to be there somewhere.

For a first attempt, thumbs up. (Y)

Thank you for the response! I will add in a navigation bar at the top as soon as I get more information to put on there. Would you say static or flash is better? I assume static as flash can be a bit over the top but then I think sometimes static images can look a little dated especially on a page that needs to be fresh and exciting.

I will change that text size and most probably the background color too haha :)

Cheers once again!

You need to go a long way before you can make a quality site...:D

Haha yeah I have contemplated just hiring someone, I thought it would be easy to make a website but turns out it's alot harder than I thought :p

Let's be encouraging maybe?

How about this... Go google for "Band website template" and take some inspiration...

I personally always go for static over flash. And with some jQuery, even static doesn't have to be...err, static.

this. Flash content can't be indexed by search engines, so I only use flash for videos and content that I don't mind not being indexed

Looks good for a first attempt. Try indenting your source code, it'll be a lot easier when you're editing it in the future.

I would recommend looking at templates to get ideas. Simplicity is always good, but it needs to look clean and well structured at the same time.

Also if you really want to make an impact on your user, try including some graphics rather than just using css solely to style it.

A good background image can make a huge difference. I don't mean a huge picture of something, I just mean a simple pattern such as diagonal lines. It would be very simple to add in and would look great!

Something along the lines of this maybe? (Without the arrow)

It's huge!

This is a problem I have with most band sites, TBH. They all lead with a video that's at gigantic proportions. Cut it down to movie trailer size, and allow people to watch it in a large resolution if they want to.

Also, a band's front page should have anything people are interested about on it. No clicking through. Logo, dates, current album (if it exists), video, Facebook link, everything. This can still be done with a "simple" look. Then if people click through they can find out more about the band, what they're up to, etc.

If you want to expand the design, try creating some distinct sections like a header, a navigation, a content area and a footer. At the moment it all just seems to be one large area.
