mutantcol
i have a home network with 4 computers, recently i made a really cheap one for my brother so he could use my shared internet connection. Thing is when my internet starts to slow down i'd like to see what he's using the internet, what he's downloading. You know of any good remote admin software which i can use to watch what's going on on his screen? Would be better if the software was free, or if it could run as a service so its harder to stop. Thanks.

+primortal Subscriber² Posted July 31, 2003 Subscriber² Share Posted July 31, 2003 Why don't you just get up from your PC and ask your brother what he doing? Why don't you say you just want to spy on your brother  RemotelyAnywhere, or here http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Network...ools/index.html
Novex
http://www.realvnc.com thats what I use on my little sisters PC, it has a little system icon in the taskbar but Ive got that hidden, though Ive heard you can recompile the source to hide it. anyway, just connect when you want to look, as long as you dont move the mouse he wont know your there ;)
Jon
Yup go for VNC if you want to spy. Personally I'd install a more advanced gateway suite like winroute, and monitor his traffic that way.

+BudMan MVC Posted July 31, 2003 MVC Share Posted July 31, 2003 Packet Sniffers are the way to go! ;) hehehe - Ok yeah, someone that does not know how to monitor the traffic of a machine on his lan. Or to setup logging of websites visted through his router. Yeah packet sniffer - he has that down :) Most likely his home network is switched, but hey a simple arp flood to overload the his switches arp table, so it fails over into hub mode. Or may he just injects his mac into his brothers machines arp table, so that his machine looks like the gateway on the network and he has setup a forward on his machine - so that his brother will not no all of his traffic is now being routed through his machine, vs the gateway. So as he puts together exactly what his brother is doing from watching the packets flow by. --- 00000000 47 45 54 20 2f 20 48 54 54 50 2f 31 2e 31 0d 0a GET / HT TP/1.1.. 00000010 41 63 63 65 70 74 3a 20 69 6d 61 67 65 2f 67 69 Accept: image/gi 00000020 66 2c 20 69 6d 61 67 65 2f 78 2d 78 62 69 74 6d f, image /x-xbitm 00000030 61 70 2c 20 69 6d 61 67 65 2f 6a 70 65 67 2c 20 ap, imag e/jpeg, 00000040 69 6d 61 67 65 2f 70 6a 70 65 67 2c 20 61 70 70 image/pj peg, app 00000050 6c 69 63 61 74 69 6f 6e 2f 78 2d 73 68 6f 63 6b lication /x-shock 00000060 77 61 76 65 2d 66 6c 61 73 68 2c 20 61 70 70 6c wave-fla sh, appl --- Little sample of a data stream - he can follow this. But not a clue on VNC or pcanywhere, or Radmin, etc... Or how to even look remotely at this brothers machines performance data - to see if he is downloading, etc.. Yeah ok - packet sniffer is the way for him to go. Cuz that is so much easier than say installing VNC with a hidden tray icon (by removing one reg entry) Or doing a search on google for Spy Software, etc.. etc.. So he can spy on what porn his brother is downloading.

Packet Sniffer/Network Protocol Analyzer - heheheh OK, yes great tool for knowing exactly what is being put on the wire, etc.. And I always have the latest copy of ethereal and winpcap on my usb disk, in my pocket. Hey it has solved quite few problems I have worked on, but used to find out what your brother is doing on his machine - yeah OK!!! ;)
mutantcol
right i tried vnc, works alright. You can tick a box which makes the server side (his) ignore inputs, so i take it that makes the mouse not move too. anyone recompiled it with the icon hidden, like novex said? AndyD
Does that VNC support any type of encryption?
Fred Derf Veteran Posted July 31, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 31, 2003 Does that VNC support any type of encryption? Oh I think it (RealVNC) defaults to Hextile encoding. I personally prefer TightVNC which also does JPG compression. The server and client come bundled and are available here. TightVNC is also backwards compatible with RealVNC and VNC 3.3.X
AndyD
I'll check both when I get home. I'm tired of using Remote Assistance every time my brother or my brother in law need help with something heh
