My first website.

Question

I have spent a few months re-designing my website. As you can tell, the host is Webs.com(also known as FreeWebs) I know what you guys are probably thinking, "Eww, another FreeWebs site" But what you don't know is that I have fully re-designed it using CSS. Please, take a look at it and give me a mini review.

I will one day switch to PHP probably. Anyhow, the link is in my signature..

Splash Page is NOT needed to front a forum IMO and if you more visitors then get rid...as already pointed don't design the site on what you want or like...think of the visitors to your site and what they would want.

Competitons / Winners can be posted on the Forum itself.

then it's time for a redesign.

Also, websites that are all black backgrounds are very 1990s, too.

You're telling him to redesign because he's using a PNG for its transparency properties? LOL WUT.

..and no, I will NOT get rid of the splashpage.

Then why are you asking for our input? A website is not a book or a magazine, it doesn't need a "front cover" and your visitors will not thank you for wasting seconds of their life and their bandwidth downloading a huge image that tells them nothing useful; it's not that they just won't like it, they'll simply go to another website.

That slash page has absolutely no purpose whatsoever. It just slows people down who want to visit your website. Plus search engines will see that page, will probably think "that's a rubbish page, it has no content" and bring the score of your entire site down. +1 on losing the splash page.

I also don't like the large number of flash applets you've got on the forum index page (the only page I looked at after the splash). Flashblock is blocking 4 flash objects. Judging from the placement/size, I'm assuming their adverts. Personally, I'm OK with text and image adverts. That's why I use flashblock and not adblock. Loading multiple flash objects per page seriously slows down web pages, especially when viewing on my netbook. Plus they often have irritating sound, or break out of their containing boxes and take over the screen. So, I'd suggest ditching freewebs and use hosting where you have control over the advertising.

I have done some work to he main site, Here, take a look...

http://www.coasterforum.net/apps/forums/

As for the splash page, we are doing the best we can to make it load faster. Also, we may add some information to it to make it more useful, Thanks everyone!

You know what would make it load infinitely faster? Removing it  Is there a reason why you're choosing to ignore the advice from pretty much everyone in this thread regarding the splash page? I'd be interested to hear what amazing reason you have for keeping it, because it really does do more harm than good.

I'm liking the less number of ads though, is that something you have control over, or is that just freewebs?

I placed the adds myself, there from Adsense. Also the splashpage.. no one is listining to me about. As I have said already, I have to keep it because every week we host a screenshot contest, along with a "project of the week" and we post it on the homepage. And that is our homepage. We cannot get rid of it even if we wanted to, but we can redo it. Witch we are in the process of doing. We are trying to make it load faster, and have more information like some of you suggested from this site.

Why don't you just turn it into a blog then? That would be FAR more useful then keeping a splash page to feature a screenshot. You can create new "sticky" posts for what you're talking about here. It would then give you a chance to have more content AND not only that but it can be referenced later on down the road (seeing as though your splash page doesn't archive it to begin with nor is there a link to a thread that is for archiving purposes.)

But yes, you CAN get rid of the splash page if you wanted to. Turn it into something else.

We are working on it! lol

And I'm not sure why everyone dislikes it so much, my members love it.

(The only reason why its so short and ugly right now is because we were trying to make it load faster.. we are re-doing it all today)

Well, we have completely re-designed most, if not all of the site, and now it loads 100% faster! Thanks everyone who gave feedback!

Any comments?
