IIS (internal server error - error 500)

Recommended Posts

i believe i might've brought this up before...but here i go again...

there seems to be something wrong with IIS...(IIS 5.1 w/ XP PRO SP1)

http://localhost and http://127.0.0.1 both result in error 500 internal server error for me...

they were working fine a while ago and then all of a sudden screwed up again...

i unchecked the "show friendly url messages' thing and it says:

Server Error

The following error occured:

Bad URL

Please contact the administrator

why is this happening and how do i fix it? i only have one user account with admin rights on this computer.

i looked up the help & support documents in windows and followed the troubleshooting instructions but that doesn't seem to do anything...

*pinging the IP/computer and then restarting the IIS*

i have also uninstalled/reinstalled it but it's still the same problem..

the url is supposed to go to the default file created which is default.htm and says "welcome to iis 5.1"..it's in HTML file so it should work no matter what but it doesn't seem to work...

please help!

i also changed the application protection to low (iis process) though i don't know what has that got to do with anything because iis seems to run fine with medium on my dad's laptop and my desktop...

although, a while ago it had started to work when i had changed it to low...*my brief moment of happiness*..then, i rebooted the computer later on and now again, the same error...

i can't seem to find much about it on the internet...

*sigh* no replies...

another update..

i tried netstat to see if port 80 was taken or something...and this is what i got

TCP 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

now...that's not my IP...but port 80 seems to be taken...so, i'm only a bit more lost now than i was a bit before..

well, i got the problem fixed finally...thanks for nothing *no offense to the people who actually had no idea, or never came across this..*

for others who may be having a similar problem...

If Internet Explorer (IE) reports a 500 error, use the IE menu, select Tools >> Internet Options >> Connections Tab >> LAN Settings and ensure that:

Automatically detect settings

and

Use automatic configuration script

are both not 'checked'
