l77Il7H
ok, i have a desktop and a laptop hooked up to a netgear router with my DSL connection. i can go online with both comps, but i am having problem with sharing files and printer! i went to "my network places" and both comps and then click "set up a home or small office network". during the wizard i select that this computer connect through a network hub with a internet connection and let the wizard complete. i done this exactly to both comps and restarted both. after restart, i try to access the file on the other comp by opening "my network places" and clicking "view workgroup computers", the loads for like a minute and then say i have no permission with accress it! this used to work when i connect the desktop and laptop directly to each other, how come it no longer works with the router? do i have to set up the router to some how let me access files from both computer? Steven
Uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing" in your "Folder Options" Then you'll see a "Sharing" tab.

=NickJ=
probably a much easier way, is to get a portable drive. :D lmao thats the stupidest thing i've heard all day! You must make sure that you have the same user&passwords on both machines for file sharing to work properly, otherwise the computers send authentication details to each other that will be wrong and hence deny access to anything Then do what xStainDx said and uncheck simple file and folder sharing in folder options, then you can share and set security on any file/folder in either comp
l77Il7H
Uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing" in your "Folder Options"Then you'll see a "Sharing" tab. i can't seem to locate the "use simple file sharing" that you speak of inside my "folder options". the closes thing i saw was "display simple folder view in explorer's folder list", is that the one? and where am i supose to see the sharing tab at? when a right click on my folder that i want to share or in my "folder options"? l77Il7H
i think i just figured out why i can't share file over my network! one comp is using a straight and one is using a crossover ethernet cable. you think that could be the problem? which wire should i be using for both? Fred Derf Veteran Posted August 2, 2003 Veteran Share Posted August 2, 2003 You need to configure TCP/IP and get the computers pinging first. See bangbang023's thread.

Fred Derf Veteran Posted August 2, 2003 Veteran Share Posted August 2, 2003 Both computers to the router's switch need to use Patch Cables. Thats basic networkiing. (Y) If you are going from one computer to another without a switch (2 computers maximum) you need a cross-over cable. Sometimes cross-over cables are required from one switch to another but the newest models either account for this automatically or they have a setting that can do this. Straight through cables are required to connect each computer to a switch. Tip: Two wrongs do make a right. If you use a switch with a cross-over setting to recross an already crossed-over cable then it will convert it back to a straight cable. Got that?
