Gamecube now withdrawn from Argos in the UK

Recommended Posts

Earlier on in the year Dixons group dropped the Gamecube with Argos then selling Gamecubes for ?80, now they've stopped selling them as well. Nintendo Europe brought all this on themselves, they really suck ass. They treat the PAL market like ****, massively delayed releases and in some cases they don't release AAA games (Animal Crossing), IDIOTS! Last years big christmas hit was Starfox Adventures which explains a lot, Xmas season in Europe was crap for Nintendo and deservedly so.

Odds on we won't see Mario Kart or F Zero this year either. NoE can kiss my ass, even the totally dire Sega Europe done a better job, at least I saw a dreamcast advert on TV, don't see **** for Gamecube. I don't remember seeing a single TV ad for Zelda or Metroid. Idiots.

Seems Woolworths will follow soon now so Nintendo might as well stop selling Gamecubes in Europe then.

I think the UK market is a joke to everyone. Films/Games/Tv get released way to long after the US. And when they do get released everyones already seen/got the pirated/imported release....

The gamecube needs alot of advertising, so does the xbox... Sony are always advertising new games (well fmv cause the games look so bad now ;) ) but its better than nowt

No doubt, I mean T3 came out today, woooooooooooow  a nice cut version as well. Pirates of the caribbean next week, lucky us!

Whilst the US will be playing the likes of Soul Caliber 2 and F Zero this month, we won't get it for months.

Unfortunately Argos didnt restock the GC after it had that deal going on. I was one of the (un?)lucky ones who managed to get it at the ?79.99 price with free game and mem card.

And I have to agree Europe seems to be the poor relation when itcomes to getting releases actually, umm, released. We are months behind the US, and the Asian market is vastly ahead of the US market so we are at the very bottom of the ladder, in fact I don't think, at this time, NoE even consider us as being part of that ladder. This is a shame as I think the GC is a great console, and as such have recently been forced to purchase an Action Replay in order to play/purchase some of the newer games. I was going to go with the FreeLoader, but some of the recent releases (F Zero is one I believe) have enhanced protections which render the FreeLoader useless, at least the protections has been bypassed with AR (apologies if what I say there is against the rules?)

So yes, NoE have shot themselves in the foot, and as you say even Sega did a better job than Nintendo seems to have done so far. NoE cant even claim that they have to convert everything to PAL, as 95%+ of the PAL games I have offer a 60Hz option so why not just release as 60Hz or nothing (like the Zelda bonus disc).

Anyhoo, this is probably the longest ever post I have made on Neowin, I will finish off by re-iterating what I said, the GC is a great little console and it would be a shame to see it practically killed off just because NoE didnt want to advertise it or even release the titles it so rightly deserves (and I dont mean bloody Pokemon)

Another first for me, a whole post without a smiley:// (Damn, spoilt it now)

*edit*

Lightfast, like the avatar, you mind if i nick it? Being a polite scouser I thought I would ask first:pp

Damn, another smiley, I just cant help myself:laugh::

Wow! They still have got Woolworths stores over there?? Man, I thought they went under. There haven't been any here in the states for over a decade. Da well. The situation does suck over there for the games. I think it could be the conversion of NTSC to PAL that slows everything down. I'm not sure though. You guys did get two dreamcast games that we never got over in the states. Shenmue 2 (which I imported, 2 years before the Xbox release over here) and Headhunter (bought it for PS2). It still sucks though. The game companies are always interested in doing well mainly in Asia and North America, while Europe gets the short end of the stick. Kinda sucks.

PAL conversion doesn't take long at all really (I've converted some DC games before) it's the translation to 4 or 5 different languages that takes the time. If they were smart they would release an english version the week after the US release and then start working on translating the game. That and the fact that nintendo are cracking down on imports really doesn't help.

You dont need to modify your GC if you have a NTSC capable TV.

Most new TV's are NTSC 3.58/4.43 compatible and can display composite/S-video and RGB without no problems at all.

Obviously RGB is what you want, it will play on any TV worldwide. But if your TV is capable try buying a NTSC USA GC and a RCA to SCART adapter and plug it straight in the back of your TV.

You shouldn't need to mod a US-NTSC cube unless you want to run JPN imports. Also, component and prog scan more than makes up for the lack of RGB SCART capability.

Games are not quite as expensive as they are on the PAL market. Try ordering from http://www.dvdboxoffice.com (which I use frequently) as they have free shipping worldwide on all products.

Yeah it is sucky indeed.

I've just got a cube, and I love it to bits, PS2 is gathering dust i an corner somewhere now.

Such a shame that finding games and things is a pain in the arse now, most of the shops here stock sod all cube stuffs :(

Having to wait for games totally sucks, but it is not all bad in Europe. F-Zero is due to come out in October, and we are getting real stuff such as t-shirts in the stars catalogue for the second time soon (Japan and the US do not have a rewards program yet). Maybe the late release is a good thing in some cases too; you might know about the 'snaking' bug in F-Zero, where you can lean left and right really fast and reach stupid speeds, allowing even a novice to defeat the staff ghosts - perhaps this will be fixed in the PAL version. Despite all this, I still say bring on simultaneous world releases.

  • 3 weeks later...

but in doing that you would probably hit walls and such. So i am guessing there is a small number of people who woudl be abled to do it throughout the whole course and if they coudl htey are pro at it anyways. Plus the dev team said that 'it was pu in intentionally' so even though it probably wasnt, they wont take it out becaues it would be admitting a mistake and contradicting themselves.
