PSP2 has "early PS3 game quality visuals"

The PSP2 ? perhaps the worst-kept secret in gaming ? can reproduce visuals on par with those seen in early PlayStation 3 games, a new report claims.

The handheld console ? rumoured to release next Christmas ? features two thumbsticks with concave indentations, IGN reports.

"As far as graphics are concerned, the PSP2 is a beast, packing enough processing hardware to produce graphics comparable to early PlayStation 3 titles," the site claims.

"The processor, we're told, is just over half as powerful as the PS3, though the specific framework of the cores and the clock speed was not revealed."

The PSP2, then, should be able to play games of a comparable visual quality to the PS3 because it renders to a smaller, lower-resolution display.

IGN suggests Sony aims to allow developers to port their PS3 games to PSP2 to create a "ubiquitous gameplay experience". Potentially, gamers would be able to seamlessly continue their PS3 gaming on PSP2.

In August Eurogamer brought you the news that the PSP2 features a touch pad on the reverse of the unit for additional controls.

And we've known for some time that the PSP2 features a slider design and two cameras ? one on the front, one on the back.

Also known is its lack of a UMD drive ? the PSP2 will run downloadable or memory-based games.

While the PSP2's graphical potential has already excited some, not everyone is convinced ? earlier this week industry analyst Michael Pachter said it will be "dead on arrival".

"We're starting to see DS sales crack," he said. "The ubiquity of the iPod touch is cutting into the handheld market. I think the PSP is dead on arrival, I think the PSP2 is dead on arrival."

I think the PSP is dead on arrival, I think the PSP2 is dead on arrival.

huh? PSP came out how long ago, how can you think the PSP is dead on arrival, that statement seems future tense to me at least... and PSP wasn't DOA, PSP2 might be, but even with the iPod touch and stuff, I dont think Nintendo will lose the crown anytime in the next 2 years

And how often does that happen?

Are you actually trying to say people don't frequent on long journeys enough?

No, I'm saying how often does the average person go on a long journey enough where they can't live without a high-end gaming system to necessitate a purchase of a PSP2?

Some people I work with have to commute an hour on a train or longer on a bus to work every day. I can see it appealing to them.

I would rather just have a remote play on a device that let's me connect to my PS3 and play PS3 games that are in my digital game library. The PSP would just act as a video display for my PS3 game. Unfortunately the way the PSP remote is now, it's only good for the PS3 dash and PS1 games.

And they would commute with an additional dedicated gaming device rather than a single multifunctional device that they most likely already have as a "distraction" from their commute?

I think any dedicated handheld gaming device is DOA next year. Phones are taking over. iPhone 4 and WP7 already have "early PS3 graphics". :/

Why not? You don't get the same experiences on phones as you do on gaming devices with buttons.

Well like the article said with the possibility of "continuing your PS3 gaming" on the PSP2 I don't see why not?

I'm a bit confused, everyone here stating that the PSP2 is a dedicated gaming device - however with the leaked photos and footage on Engadget the device is Sony Ericsson. Not the same thing? I've been out of the loop for a while so I'm not sure if the PSP2 is a different device entirely than the "PSPhone".

Oh please. Move along troll. Shiesh. By your logic why do people need to have a high-end gaming system to begin with? They don't. Its called a luxury.

That's unrelated.

When you're on a long journey? I'd like to see you try.

i have a psp 1000 or 2000 or something and the battery lasts about 1 hour tops. i base this on teh fact that when it was still new for me, i used it on car rides to teh city that take about 1.5-2hours and it ran out of batteries about half way there.

so basically for "long" journeys, the psp is useless to game with. if the psp2's cpu is half as powerful as the ps3's without huge improvemnt sin power efficency over the psp's, then it will be useless for more than gaming in bed or on the couch with it plugged in, let alone as a truly mobile device.

that's my experience with the psp anyway.

PSP2 won't have an optical drive so battery power is less.

so because an optical drive is gone, it uses less power? never mind the much more powerful processor which probably uses a lot more power........
