[Wordpress] Make your Wordpress more like a community

Question

Hi,

I'm no fan of using a forum on a small community but I still want to create a community feeling. All content is brought on by Wordpress but the basic member profiles are worthless. I therefore want to enhance the member feature by using "real" profiles as on a forum without it being a forum. So for example, when they click on a member's name they don't go to their website (default Wordpress option) but they go to a profile page, just like you would on a forum. On that profile page they see the profile picture, registered date, number of comments made, comments per day and so on, you get the idea.

Does anyone know a plugin which can help me? I've found Buddypress on the Wordpress site but that is just too much. It almost seems as integrating a forum, Twitter and Facebook on your site and that's not what I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

W.

If you are only looking for extending the user profiles, then you don't need a WordPress plugin. You can easily get by creating some functions to allow users to have more custom fields in their profile.

Check out this article to get started on adding AND using custom user profile fields: http://justintadlock.com/archives/2009/09/10/adding-and-using-custom-user-profile-fields

BTW, BuddyPress is a social network--of course it's going to have a lot more than what you need.

Thank you for the links and clarifying BuddyPress's main goal.

EDIT: Changing the link so it goes to the user's profile instead of website is something which I should change in single.php then?
