So I am meeting my new business partner in 2 days! Need some advice&#33

Question

So I am a graphic/Web-designer and I am not a very good coder. I posted an ad on craigslist tittled: "CALLING ALL CODERS WHO SUCK AT DESIGNING"

I got a good response of quality people and developers!! I have finally selected the coder I think I would work best with and we set up a meeting on Saturday!

We decided we are going to compile a new website together. I am only 21 and my new coder is 22.

OKAY HERES MY QUESTION!

What should we go over exactly? Yes I will design the site's and he will code them and we will have a contact page with examples of our work offering high-class websites on a freelance base. and what not and info about both of us..

As a web designer if you where in my shoes and where meeting a stranger that you would eventually form a strong business relationship with.. What would be the main topics, Concerns, Ideas you might bring up when collaborating how the partnership will work. how the site will work. Things that could be in conflict later and should be discussed early on..

Let me know if you have any ideas! I am stuck!!

Thank you!!

Almost 40 views and no one has any advice? :)

If you where to meet your new business partner what would be some main things that we should definitely go over?

I'd probably sit down together with a lawyer and draw up an agreement contract between you and the other business partner, as the major potential conflicts later down the road would be regarding the ownership and financial payouts.

I am not talking about legal issues. And Neither of us would have the money to "sit down with a lawyer" Although that would be an ideal situation but where just simple freelancers here joining forces.. So i would quote the design to him he would quote the coding to me and we would combine that quote for our client.. Simple enough.. But he proposed that we meet up so I just dont know what to expect.. Wanted some ideas to bring up mostly.

Thanks for the replies!!

Sit down with him in a coffee shop or something, make it informal.

Talk about any potential or creative issues you both may have and write down a contract for each you to sign. It won't have any legal validity (maybe it will, I don't know about where you live) but both of you can feel obliged by its terms.

If you can, take the advice others gave here and talk to a lawyer and see if you can make a legal partnership or contract on the cheap. This way everything can be laid out so there won't be any problems or disputes in the future.

meeting a "business partner" from craigslist? LOL, good luck!!

I know it might sound a little odd i guess. But as a self taught designer I really don't personally know anyone else in my area who does any type of web development.. I selected this person from about 20 other people who emailed me. Spoke to him and decided to meet up and discuss the next step. Before i was jumping around a bunch of coders.. Now I can collaborate ideas with someone and actually come up with a real business plan and see how we can benefit each other..

Dont see anything wrong this that..

Yeah I was thinking a coffee shop would be a good idea. Always a good place to plug in you laptop too plus free wifi! Will definitely work out some type of formal agreement. But I dont think a lawyer is necessary just yet.. Also we both live in Seattle and I am pretty sure a hand written contract is valid in Washington state.
