Best FREE Forum Software for MODs

Question

Hi guys, I've been looking at an IPB licence but the price is just crazy. I've had a nose around and a lot of people are saying some free software is just as good, and much easier to modify/there are a LOT more mods out there due to the open source nature.

I've noticed MyBB and was wondering what people thought? Easy to use? Decent? Mod Capability?

Also, are there any decent skins for MyBB or other free forum software.

I've seen this: http://postbomb.net/forums/

which I absoloutely love! how difficult would it be to achieve a look like this? With the navigation bar on the top right.

Basically, I'm looking for free forum software with the best mod capability.

Thanks :)

MyBB would be an awesome alternative to go with! As far as how you want your MyBB skin to look, it all depends on your patience to work with their skinning system and your knowledge of HTML/CSS and maybe a little PHP.

I have been using phpBB on a forum for where I work. It has worked out rather nicely and we have been able to fully customize it, Also we are using it for my World of Warcraft Guild forum.

I always choose SMF (http://simplemachines.org/)... It has a great modifications database as well, as you can see here: http://custom.simplemachines.org

SMF has 1.6k modifications compared to MyBB's 243.

Oh, and SMF has somewhere around 1.2k themes, compared to MyBB's 120.

While those numbers probably need to be halved (as there are two versions of SMF right now), SMF has more options still than MyBB, if that is what you are looking for.
