trikster
More than half the games I own are sports games. 80% of the games I play currently are sports games. So am I really wrong to say that I'm madly in love with the sports genre? I have friends who absolutely despise sports games. Apparently they have no appeal and have no variety. Is it just me, or are they absolutely freaking nuts? Sports games, to me, have the most variety of any games because each game you play is completely different. Sports games were the first to include online play, and will be the last to include online play. Basketball, football, baseball, hockey, soccer, pool, cards, olympics, cricket...hell, you name a sport, and if a sports game was released for it, you can bet your ass I've played it. I've played NBA2k3 on Xbox so much I can even say that I've beaten it (Putting the game on All-Star and keeping the gameplay sliders all the way up can't even stop me from winning.) I've played sports games on the NES (Tecmo Bowl, baby!), SNES, Genesis, Playstation, Gameboy Advance, Xbox, Playstation 2, and Gamecube...just to name a few. But seriously...how can people even think about naming a genre which they believe is better than the genre of sport? RPGs, Action, Adventure - no matter how much you play, you'll beat the game someday. You can never really beat sports games. Sorry if a lot of this didn't make sense...I just had a lot of stuff to get off my chest. I find it amazing how someone can sit by me while I play a sports game, watch me cheer my ass off and curse at the TV, and tell me that sports games are stupid. I just don't understand it. mAcOdIn Veteran Posted August 6, 2003 Veteran Share Posted August 6, 2003 I'd rather you be crazy in love with sports games, than be crazy in love with the taste of puppy dog brains or something. But personally I like sports games but don't own that many. Every new release seems to be nothing but a new roster, and I refuse to pay 50 bucks a year to have the most common roster. I don't care if I'm playing as joe montana or the current quarterback, it's just a name. Plus I can go outside and play a sport with my friends, but I can't go and play grand theft auto in real life. But I guess that's why I like hockey games the most because there's no way to play it here.

I find it amazing how someone can sit by me while I play a sports game, watch me cheer my ass off and curse at the TV, and tell me that sports games are stupid. I just don't understand it. It makes perfect sense, sports games is the best genre in games lol, I owned more sports games than any other type of game and pretty much played them til the cartridge or cd stopped working. I still remember playing madden '92 on my snes and thinking it was the best football game I have ever played, and now I can't wait til 04 :D I do the same cheering and swearing playing sports games as well, especially in NHL 2003 for the GC, man being goalie in that game is f'n hard ;) And a few friends hate playing those types of games but I chalk it up to them being sorry at the game, basically they are jealous of your skills :)
Boffa Jones Veteran Posted August 6, 2003 Veteran Share Posted August 6, 2003 I love the hock,ey games but i agree that buying a new roster every year is rediculous. but apparantly the new nhl games are going to be a relatively large leap in progress. But you fail to mention party games shooters or fighters, those games also fall under the never beatables, adn the sims i guess?

Fighters are beatable. They have easy, medium, and hard difficulty settings, and if finish the game, defeating all the characters on the hardest difficulty setting, you have beaten the game. You're right about party games, which is probably another reason why I love to play party games as well. Shooters that never end? I find this hard to believe, but then again, I don't play shooters. But if companies are releasing shooters that consumers know can't be beaten, why buy the game? And the Sims also can't be beaten, I guess..although I fail to see how much fun you can possibly have over an extended period of time controlling a family in a house. I've got VERY emotional playing sports games. Cursing, screaming, cheering, yelling...especially with a friend over. Going crazy while yelling in their face, having my parents yell at me to stop yelling...sports games are definitely the most emotional games of all. LRoling
I am a hockey fanatic, and I must say, one of the best games I've played on console and on PC, has been the EA Sports NHL series and Sega Sports NHL2K- series, both are unbelievable. I love baseball as well, so I play those quite often, I own a lot of games, about 50% being sports games, so you aren't alone, I should say, I play probably 100% sports games most of the time, although, I'm addicted to Counter-strike, and at the moment, Rise of Nations. Krux
sports games are lame after about an hour you find that one play that lets you score everytime you get the ball or hit a home run everytime your up to bat its just dumb. Maybe if some one made an AI for one of those infernal games that would adapt to your play style so you can't just use one play over and over and over again they would be good. But since they don't there crap. IMO, when the day comes that they do make a good AI I will change my opinion.
CatnipOligarchy
sports games are the best... they are basically all i buy.. every year a i get a basketball, football, hockey, and baseball game.. i love getting the new rosters and starting anew.. i love slowly increasing the difficulty level.. and eventually winning a champion.. often with underdogs since i play with atlanta teams.. franchise mode is the greatest thing thats ever happpened to sports games.. a sports game has incredible replay value as well. i can stay occupied with those 4 titles for a whole year until the next years games come out.. you are not alone man.. rts has more replay value, I agree, but a sopts game cant made me feel emotions that other games with good plots can if you are very attached to your favorite sports teams like i am, and are used to seeing them lose, like i am.. when you can succeed and pull out a clutch victory, it feels pretty good.. now if only it would happen in real life.. brianicoleman
100 % here.... the realism.... its so much better than battling dragons in dungeons, or hopping around with a pokemon thing.... there are so many different outcomes - there is not one game that there is one ending.... well, unless you win it all, but all the games go differently, therefore there are multitudes of various things that could happen, in which you will NEVER find in any other games.... especially not in mario party... omg that game sucks so bad... a freaking board game on a tv.. you dont even get move your piece.. it moves for you..... oh well.... sports games are so much better (Y)

When's the last time you've played a sports game - 1996? The days of SNES and Genesis are over, my friend. Sports games are now very difficult, and you need smarts to win. Buy a real football game like ESPN NFL Football or Madden 2004, or a real baseball game like World Series Baseball 2k3, play on the hardest difficulty, and you'll see that the only way you can win is if you think hard and choose the best possible plays throughout the game. Games adapting to your playing style, although not available yet (at least none I'm aware of), can be implemented and will be available in the next coming years...maybe as soon as next year. Considering what companies have accomplished already, making a game adapt to your playing style seems almost like a childish task. Try this. Buy ESPN NFL Football (September 1st is the release date) for Xbox. Buy Xbox Live. Get online and play with someone, with your headset on, and tell me it's not the coolest experience ever. I can clearly remember the third time ever playing NFL2k3 online...I was down by 4 points with 5 seconds left on the clock on my own 20 yard line. Only a hail mary would let me win this game. Jeff Garcia dropped back and hurled a pass downfield, right into the hands of Terrell Owens for the win. I was screaming crazily into the microphone, while the guy on the other end whined and cried, begging for mercy. It was one of the best video game experiences of my life. Let's see you capture that much emotion with an RPG.
IlliniPi
*Pauses game* I've always been a sports nut my whole life, and ever since the Nintendo era, I've liked sports games. I remember playing Ken Griffey Jr. baseball and making my own custom team and beating the crap out of everyone. I think of how unrealistic that game was and compare it to today's standards, which imo are almost close to lifelike at some times. *Goes back to playing NCAA Football 2004* :D

I'm not sports nut I don't even watch it on tv in fact if sports come on tv I typically get up and go outside or go over to a friends house. The only time or way I will watch sports is if I go to the game IN PERSON REAL LIFE. (or if its the X-Games or something) There was no reason to flame me or try and push sports games on me, after all... I agree, If you are going to play a sport, do it in reality, its much more fun. The reason people should play videogames is to explore things that otherwise wouldnt be possible in reality - ie. pokemone, DD, Magic, mario, sonic, CS, etc... I remeber playing the sims and right about the 30 mins into i was taking out the garbage... then i realized.. wtf am i doing? **** I need to take out the garbage right next to me anyways. Since when do people want to play a simulation of reality, that is the most retarded concept ever... IM sorry, but those are just bad concepts, and for some reason the sims is really popular  Edited August 7, 2003 by EzeWong
