AshMan
Hi Guys. Last week, I asked for help on writing a film review as I had never written one and was asked by a famous British magazine to write one. Thanks to all those who advised me and gave me pointers. Here?s what I have written:Guns, Girl(s) and Gadgets - a phrase normally reserved for the likes of James Bond but watching this movie, you?d be forgiven for forgetting you?re watching Tomb Raider. Angelina Jolie reprises her role as "Lady" Croft" the sexy British archaeologist of refined taste, highly competent in various forms of weaponry, travels around the world to exotic locations, has friends in virtually every country, uses a wide variety of nifty gadgets, looks fabulous as she fights with sharks, battles with demons, flies off buildings among other feats to save the world (yet again) from evil. Her performance alone will keep fans of the game on the edge of their seats. Facing her greatest challenges and dangers yet, Jolie shows off her physical prowess like never before. During this exciting instalment of her adventures, the intrepid tomb raider jet skies, rides horses, motorcycles and much more through such exotic locations as Hong Kong, Kenya, Wales, Greece and Africa as she searches for an infamous site known as "The Cradle of Life." She's on a quest to find a sphere that contains the location of the mythical Pandora's Box, and keep it out of the hands of the Chinese crime syndicate, ex-boyfriends and a megalomaniac who wants to use Pandora's Box as a doomsday weapon. The film begins with Lara diving into a sunken temple off the coast of Greece. While there, she?s attacked by Chinese mercenaries, her support crew killed and left for dead, the mercenaries making off with a mysterious glowing sphere. Seems that mad scientist Jonathan Reiss (Ciaran Hinds) is looking for Pandora's Box, and the sphere is the key to finding it. Croft is appointed by MI6 to stop Reiss because opening the box would unleash an amazingly nasty plague upon the world. Besides her support staff of Butler Hillary (Chris Barrie) and computer expert Bryce (Noah Taylor), Croft joins forces with ex- boyfriend Terry Sheridan (Gerard Butler), a shifty mercenary and the only person who knows how to get to the mercenaries who stole the sphere in the first place. This second installment of the movie franchise didn?t quite live up to my expectations. However fans of the game will no doubt find Jolie is excellent as Lara Croft, and there probably isn't an actress around who would be better suited for the role. Jolie has the physicality *cough*, the look, the voice, and the attitude to pull off the role effortlessly. For me, Hinds enigmatic performance was probably the redeeming factor of the whole movie as the roll summed up all the great characteristics an evil masterminds should be. I haven?t seen a more elegant villain like Hinds since the days of Dr No. As for the other cast members, their performances and indeed their rolls were rather disappointing. OK, I understand the homage to the butler, but the computer geek; does he add anything to the movie? Butler Hillary, Chris Barrie?s acting skills have not improved since the days of Red Dwarf and I kept expecting him to quote some Space Corps Directive. Smeg that! Despite the many disappointments, "Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life" is a fairly good movie if you have nothing better to spend a good two hours on. 3 out of 5. out of 5.
