Help with clipping masks in illustrator, please.

Question

Hi,

I'm trying to get a similar effect to this here, where words that change in gradient spell out a number, or in my case a whole word.

http://www.crystalxp.net/news/img/2986.jpg

The way I assumed to do it was to type out a collection of words in a square shape, make a box of the same size with a gradient in it and then create a clipping mask which would give me all the words that I had made in a square shape, in a coloured gradient rather than their original black colour. Then, with the coloured word gradient, place a larger word over it and create a clipping mas of that... so I would be left with the large word shaped by smaller words with a coloured gradient..... Does that make sense?

For some reason, when I try the first part and make a clipping mask of the box of letters with a gradient box below them, all the letters just turn white and the gradient box disappears.

If I just use one word with a gradient background i can create a clipping mask of it just fine, but with lots of words and a gradient background it doesn't seem to work.

Does anyone know why or how to get around it? I can provide screenshots if it helps and someone is willing to try to help me.

Thanks

nevermind, i figured it out. had to expand the text and make compound paths before doing the clipping mask. i don't really understand the reasoning behind it though, just the how.
