I want to make a new tech news website

Question

I want to make a tech news website. I have general knowledge in HTML, CSS, and JS. But never programmed anything for real, so I can say I know these, but I have 0 experience.

My question is, what does it take to make a tech news website like Anandtech.com or Fudzilla.com?

Please give me as much information as possible. I'm ready to use some already written code to make life easier. Please tell about all the options I have.

Thank you

PS: I've asked the same question on two other websites, but they don't seem to be really active.

Well, you're going to need a CMS to manage all of your content. You can either opt for something like WordPress if you want to host it yourself and have full control of what you do with your site (how it's setup, designed, coded, et al.)

Otherwise you can also look into Squarespace which is a hosted CMS that's pretty popular.

How about using WordPress? So you make a tech blog instead of a "website" like my tech blog cravingtech.com

Just be aware that tech sites/blogs are highly saturated so would take lots of effort to make yours different than the others out there.

WordPress is quite powerful too and after tweaking the themes here and there (mostly CSS, assuming you have picked a theme that you like and tweak it), you'll end up just focusing on publishing news/contents. Really recommended :)

Most big blogs (techcrunch.com, etc) use WordPress too so you will not go wrong with this one

Thank you very much for the answers. Now I have the confidence to make a website.

The problem now is that I know I don't have something really special when it comes to a tech website. All I can do is get news out as quick as possible. But when it comes to reviews and whatsoever, I can't make any due to many factors (money, where I live, etc...)

So, what other ideas other than a tech website can I implement?

I would say the most important thing is to have content. Having a CMS is only going to give you a place to put the content. An empty CMS is not going to be very successful. Most websites start with good intentions, but get abandoned due to lack of effort.

If you want to have a successful website, then you need to be committed to producing the content. Period. :)

And I am so :D I hope I succeed! thank you!

Like others said, it's all about dedication. It takes strong focus, and devotion to get off the ground if you want to compete with all the other websites out there. Also, i sent you a message about an idea.

Here are some tips as I built my tech blog from zero too and it's growing amazingly now.

- Start with news but don't just copy paste it. Provide screenshots and your own opinion and words.

- How-To posts also work well to attract visitors (how to format Windows, how to sync bookmark in firefox, etc)

- Post reviews of the items you have (mouse, keyboard, camera, anything)

- If you put up a good review (thorough, screenshots, detailed), one day you can start emailing technology vendors to loan or give you a sample of their products. Put more reviews.

all in all, as a technology blog/site, you'll never run out of things to talk about :)

Actually your question has intrigued me to write a post about this (a blogging tip to those who want to start a tech blog) lol thanks for the idea
