Building a website

Question

Hi all,

At work we are thinking about a new website, and thus on which platform.

The question comes up whether to go open-source (e.g. Joomla with some addons) or to create an own 'cms-like' platform.

There are three elements the website must contain:

- an ordering module (though not e-payment)

- a module which handles events and registration details of customers

- static text

What is the best option? Open-source or closed-source (but with php-documentation and 'own' libraries)?

What are the pros and cons of the two?

Thx!

In my opinion why re-invent the wheel? If there's an open source CMS that does what you want, then why bother in making your own CMS?

Using a CMS is great because of the fact that in 5-10 minutes it'll be up and running. Creating a CMS takes ages, and will need to be throughly tested against hackers/crackers.

Try looking to see if Wordpress does what you require - VERY powerful. Ok it's a 'blogging' tool but you don't have to use it like that, but all sites usually have a 'news' section anyway. Literally thousands of add ons *thums up*

I agree with the above, I'd highly recommend wordpress also, it is fantastic for websites.

Also want to add, visit this post again in 24 hours or so, see all the suggestions, then go try them out. After all you'll be using it. Then if neither of them are good enough, get out your coding fingers!
