I use Joomla. It works great and there are LOTS of templates to get you started. It is modular and is easy to use....... and, of course it is free. Just sign up with a hosting site, download it, and start modifying the modules to reflect your content.

Here are some examples to look at:

Digital Dave's

Outdoor Photographer

My Computer Playground

This Rules

Here is the info : Joomla Info

If you are an accomplished web designer, then this may not appeal to you, but for me, it fits the bill.

I mean the actual database part of the site - being able to gather a list of names as they've done and have it work like it does.

I have a website using Wordpress.

As far as I've seen, there is nothing already pre-built that will function like the example you gave based on football stats alone. You will more than likely need to learn more about WordPress to either create your own plugin or customized theme to operate close to the example you gave. Or utilize a separate script that's designed to keep track of players/stats and just integrate it with WordPress.

Hi Mark. If you want to know how it's done you will have to learn a couple more things besides html and css.

If you're really serious about making sites you will have to learn how to use a database system like MySQL (pretty easy). Once you know the basics of a database you will have to learn how to control it with a server-side language like PHP (one of the easiests computer languages to use IMO).

If you're not serious about making sites, you'll probably have to hire someone to develop the back-end for you while you can just change the appearance with html and css.

If you'd like any further recommendations let me know, we're here to help. If you're interested in learning back-end (database and server side programming) let me know so I can recommend where you can learn. I also don't mind chatting about programming so if ever have a question or are stuck I wouldn't mind helping you through instant messages via any client since I have a lot of free time nowadays.

Hi,

I know a little about MySql as well but just the basics, I've learnt all I know now through running a forum like this (my site uses an Invision forum and Wordpress).

How would I go about hiring someone to develop what I need as I feel I'm a long way off getting to the stage where I could do it myself, is there a certain website for that?

Thanks.

You can post on Neowin itself looking to hire someone but you should be warned that you will need a decent enough budget to have someone be able to complete the work similar to the example site you provided.

You can also try places like elance.com, freelancer.com to have people 'bid' on your work listing.

I have put it on Elance, someone responded. How do I know they are for real, as I am new to the site. Am I expected to pay them in advance?

You'll likely want to use a MySQL database and PHP. That just seems like the simplest way to do things.

But with limited HTML/CSS knowledge, I recommend you get someone to code it for you - like Cupcakes has suggested - and have an update-able back-end to the website where you can manually update the entries.

That is what I'm after but not sure where to go, I've advertised on elance but i'm new to all that.

This might be a little over your head, but you can try http://www.tizag.com/phpT/ they have a great PHP and MySQL tutorial. It's how I began to learn!
