Learning PHP

Question

I've been putting it off for years now, how many I'm not sure. I am very competent at HTML and CSS, I've been building websites since the times the <marquee> tag was commonly used.

I've tried learning it several times, this usually ends up with me giving up after a day or two because it all seems like gibberish to me and I've been able to get by with html/css and customising ready made CMS's so far. But I would like to learn it and it seems like a lot of you guys here know the language, so... Where should I start?

Grab a book from the library, it's a pretty easy language to get in to. As far as mucking about with Wordpress, I'd suggest setting up a local copy using WAMP, MAMP, or LAMP, and modifying any of the php functions to see what happens. You can get a lot done in Wordpress with an understanding of php, if not a good enough knowledge of it to program on your own.

Buy a book! Don't download the PDF from rapidshare (not saying you do!), acutally buy the book and get it in your hands to read. The benefits of having a good book to reference and make notes in is paramount. I learnt php mainly from deciding on a project, mapping it out then learning what I need to know to get the project complete, Doing this over a few years lead to me being able to complete any project I set myself now without reference.
