OPaul
ICS would be the perfect solution. Which machine has the modem in, the 2000 or XP?
[jon]
the modem is in the XP computer... but as i said, the built-in windows XP ICS doesn't want to work :(

Argonaut
have you checked the ICS service is enabled and running? Also, the nic on xp that feeds to the other should be 192.168.0.1 and that should also be set as gateway on the other.... also, can you be more explicit on exactly what is not working..... TomUsher
Try changing the TCP/IP properties in the network settings on the XP computer to this: IP Ad: 192.168.0.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 And on the client (the computer with 2k), set the settings as: Ip Ad: 192.168.0.2 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.0.1 DNS Server: 192.168.0.1 If ya don't get anything I just said try www.annoyances.org Hope that helped :-) trefaes
NeoSigma
getting a router would be ideal since you can get them for less then 40 bucks now. I don't understand why XP's ICS wouldn't work. Maybe it's not installed or configured properly. From you description I assume you have a hub, two network cards in the pc that will act as the dhcp, and are using straight through cable right? Try running windows xp network setup wizard and run the disk it creates on the other machines.
Argonaut
also a hardware issue, unless you are using hub/switch/router/wifi, remember the cable should be a xover cable!
[jon]
ok i will be changing the gateways on the other computers shortly. the computers are as follows: 192.168.0.1 [ win xp ] <--- has internet connection 192.168.0.2 [win xp] 192.168.0.3 [win 2k ] so what exactly should i do

TomUsher
make sure all computers have the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and both client computers have the gateway and DNS server set as 192.168.0.1 Then make sure you've ran the ICS wizard on XP and all the other computers... then... errr... in your network settings you should have: Client For Microsoft Networks File and Printer Sharing and Internet Protocol (where all the IP's are set) It worked for me :-)
[jon]
how do i set the gateway?
TomUsher
Control Panel > Network Connections > Open the 'Local Area Connection' (or whatever you've called it) properties. Then open Internet Protocol settings, everything is there :-)
Argonaut
its below the settings for ip and dns in the client machines It basically tells the client to look into the machine with ICS for the data stream, plus the DNS resolution
