neojoker
What are some different types of home servers that can be built or made out of extra PCs? I know, of course, that you can make Web/FTP/mail servers, or even routers, but are there any others (just searching for ideas here). Thanks. John Veteran Posted August 8, 2003 Veteran Share Posted August 8, 2003 what do you mean others? game servers, dns server, dhcp, wins, domain controller (don't try this one), streaming media server....
mrogers
Yeah, gameguy hit the major ones...what else exactly are you after? And how old of a PC are you talking about? You don't need much for a file server or a basic web server, but if you're running any sort of dynamic site with a database backend you should at least have a 400-500 MHz machine with a decent chunk of memory. And gameguy is right...don't try a domain controller...*shudder*...I'll never make that mistake again. Talk about hosing my server and network...
neojoker
That's the kind of stuff I was looking for. Just other suggestions of stuff to do. The machine I have is 400 MHz with 384 MB RAM. By the way, domain controllers aren't so bad. I've done that before, I just wanted to try something new to play around with.

Talk about hosing my server and network... I think this is a matter of simply not knowing what you're doing, not that it is a bad idea to do it. Setting up a domain controller, if you know what to expect and how to do it, is easy. If you've never done it, don't know how domains work, and don't understand Active Directory and DNS, you're going to shoot yourself in the foot. mrogers
I'm sure you're right...I've never had to set up a domain contoller before. Although I'm pretty good with most network stuff, so I figured I could handle it. Apparently not. I didn't really need it, it was just an experiment, and I failed ;)
