Netgear Wireless Router Setup Question

Recommended Posts

My cousin who are the tenants of the first floor got DSL last week. He said since he doesn't browse as much, he's willing to network my home PC with his. I was planning on getting the NETGEAR MR814 Wireless Router at Best Buy this week since there will be a $40 mail in rebate . Anyone have any praise for that router?

Unfortunately, my cousin's computer is still running Windows 98, so don't ask. Anyone think I'll run into any problems setting the router up on 98, whereas my computer is running XP? Basically the router will be stationed on the first floor and my room is on the 3rd floor, I'm sure it'll still be in range.

I have that same router. Windows 98 shouldnt be a problem, just set the computer to automatically get ip address and all the other stuff. Router setup is accessed through a web based interface, so shouldnt be a problem there. I've had no major problems with mine.

that's the good thing about TCP, doesn't matter what OS it is running under.. it'll work transparently. The windows 98 machine wont even know/care that your XP machine is there. The problems come in if you wanna share files tho... you'll have to turn on the guest account on your (windows xp) machine so the windows 98 can communicate

Yeah I was sure the process would work. I don't plan to do file sharing between our computers just internet connection sharing until I can afford to get DSL for the household.

and congrats on becoming a mod SHoTTa35

i just bought this card yesterday too!

connected my desktop thru wired and my laptop wirelessly!

somehow the wireless connection keeps dropping! IE would work for 2 min, then it won't be able to load. i have to close it, then open a new IE window! pretty weird! even though sinal strength is 100%

actually another additional question.

Ok I already bought the router, I'll set it up later tonight. I have a wireless network (netgear) card installed on my laptop for awhile now since my university had wireless networking.

My bro wanted a wireless usb adapter for his desktop. I figured it would be best to get a brand new one of ebay, considering $70 at the store is too expensive. But what brand should I get: Netgear or Linksys. There aren't many Netgear wireless adapters up for bid. For some reason the Netgear one looks like a small stick. Should I go for the Linksys one instead?

doesn't matter really.. so if you liking the linksys then get that but netgear will do just fine too...

I would get the netgear one, but it just looks like a stick, so I'm not sure of its performance. Plus the adaptor just plugs into the computer.

Whereas with the Linksys you hook up through a USB cable, meaning I might be able to better position it. I could be wrong about the netgear. So what are you guys using to give wireless access to your desktops.

So earlier today I got a wireless network router. I was downstairs configuring my cousin's computer. I hooked his DSL modem to the router and another network cable from his comp to the router. That part was easy, I didn't need to look at the instructions for that. However I decided to check it out. It tells me to then go through the install assistant on the CD which is just some animation on how to make sure TCP/IP is set. I went through that junk, since his comp is running Win 98. Ok it's configured and I rebooted. It rebooted fine, I put in the CD so I can configure the router.

Then outside, someone hit my cousin's car, so we had to go out and check it out. When we came back in, it looked like the computer had somehow restarted itself up. But when it restarted it's stuck on the Dell Bootup Image.

It makes two beeps for POST, so I assume something is wrong. My guess somehow when I went through the whole TCP/IP incident the OS configured the drivers again, so that might be causing problems.

I can't seem to get into BIOS, which key is it on a Dell again? I have tried DEL and F8. I also inserted the win 98 CD to no avail.

*I sit down and figure this myself, but I want others opinions and don't want to screw up his comp. anymore. Had it been my own system I wouldn't have a problem. I also think I shouldn't have went with the instructions on the CD. As a switch so far it works great though between my computers.

don't worry about it, I have everything up and running, including the machine itself. I was just a little bit paranoid at the time since it wasn't my computer and it was getting late. I came the next morning inserted the win 98 boot disc and CD and got in. I also got the router working easily and the PC card on the laptop. I'm in my attic (3rd floor) and the router is on the first floor working fine, depending on which section of the attic I'm in.

The point of this whole wireless project was mainly to get to see if my younger bro's PC can reach the wireless reception since his PC is also in the attic. I on the otherhand am taking my laptop back to college where wireless is also available. All in all had the slight screwups didn't occur, this would have taken under 30 min. and less.

I'm about to get another adapter for the desktop, but this time USB. Anyone have any preferrence between netgear and linksys USB wireless adapters?
