Mr. Gibs Posted January 19, 2011 Share Posted January 19, 2011 It appears Microsoft has found the cause for the excessive data usage some Windows phone 7 users have discovered, with their phones downloading up to 50 MB each day for no obvious reason.In a statement to Seattle PI they blamed a ?third-party solution commonly accessed from Windows Phones? for the excessive use, saying: We have determined that a third-party solution commonly accessed from Windows Phones is configured in a manner that potentially cause larger than expected data downloads. We are in contact with the third party to assist them in making the necessary fixes, and are also pursuing potential workarounds to address the configuration issue in case those are needed. At this point in our investigation, we believe this is responsible for most of the reported incidents. We are investigating additional potential root causes for the remainder of the reports. A small (low single-digit) percentage of Windows Phone customers have reported being affected. We are continuing to investigate this issue and will update with additional information and guidance as it becomes available. Microsoft has declined to say what ?third-party solution? is responsible, but I would speculate the facebook integration is most likely. Microsoft did not say when a fix would be available. If not them some blame does lie with MS. The phone automatically shuts off WiFi when the screen is off to save power. Hence if any application relies on push syncing, it will be sent via 3G during that time. Bet it's facebook. Dunno tbh. There are reports, even with usage graphs, showing Yahoo mail's syncing is using up crazy amounts of data. Facebook could also be one of the culprits depending on how many friends you have / what they do. For example, if you have a ton of friends that change their status, upload pictures etc often, it will start using up large amounts of data. ~Johnny Posted January 19, 2011 Share Posted January 19, 2011 I wouldn't say it's Facebook - it doesn't have any sort of push notifications or background downloading, and people are saying these are happening at random times, even when not using the phone. That, and they wouldn't refer to their Facebook app as third party either - it's a first/second party app :/ Whatever it is, it's probably and app that's popular in America but not in the UK? o.O As far I as I can tell all these excessive data reports have been from the US :/ They'd definitely not call the OS's Facebook integration third party either, and even that doesn't do much background downloading (most of it's work is done in the foreground when you load what's new in the people's hub) <img> Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

So really, this makes me think that if not every WP7 owner has the problem that it's not specific to the OS but due to some mix of 3rd party apps or something to that extent. They did say that they're looking at other things as well, not just this. So it could infact be a few things and not just one specific app or feature. Still on the flip side I wish they'd add a wifi option to have the phone use wifi even when the screen is off on selected networks. Like for example my home or office network, if my battery gets low it's not like I'm in the middle of nowhere so I can connect it and have it charge anyways.
