Designing a professional website

Question

I want to make a tech news website.

I started learning PHP, and since I already know how to program, I learned big amount yesterday.

Now I want to focus more on the design first (HTML, CSS, etc...) I already know these two, I have to revise CSS though.

My question is: What is a good book/resource for learning how to design a website professionally. That is, assuming I already know all the basic, how do I make a simple (for quick loading) yet professional and slick website?

I'm looking for a source/book that gives tips, tricks, recommendations, etc...

The only web design book I own is "The principles of beautiful web design" by Jason Beaird, it's a pretty good book if you don't know much about designing in general (balancing space, rule of 3rds, typography etc). I find using other websites as inspiration to be more beneficial though. There are loads of web design blogs around (which usually look pretty slick themselves) that have a showcase section of other websites that look good. Have a google around to find some you like.

As far as quick loading goes, I have a different point of view. I'll design a website that is exactly how I/the-client wants it to look. Then I make it. If it loads slowly due to large graphics or a large number of requests, I'll optimise it. Eg, use a different file format for some images, use CSS sprites, minimise javascript, pre-load images.

I have a bunch of books in there that would be a good place to start. Something on HTML5 and CSS3. That's if you want to learn about coding it..

As far as designing goes, the only thing I would really recommend is to just find some books that go over the user interface and user experience when it comes to designing. Nothing can really teach you how to 'design', as that's entirely subjective and up to your creativeness. But for anything else, sure the books will def help :)

if you want to create a website and you dont have now the necessary knowledge for that...i recommend you a program like web to date 7 from data becker, i used this program since the 6 version and is it very useful to work with it, and better when you know something about html or php because then you can work faster and better, but it allows you to do the website now and then to make it better.
