I dun know if this has been asked b4..but i've noticed that if we activated the default firewall connection in WinXP Pro..

The outgoing part of file sharing function of Win Messenger 4.6 does not work..!!

Is there a workaround to this? Maybe from M$ or other..

I posted the same question but did not receive any response other than what you already did, which is disable the firewall.

This wasn't acceptable to me, so I did some research and found that Messenger uses ports 6891 to 6901 for sending files (up to 10 in fact). So, I went into the config for the firewall, selected advanced (which shows the current ports that can be enabled or disabled, and added one, The port I supplied was 6891 (I figured I would only ever be sending 1 file at a time anyway) for both incoming and outgoing.

When the settings were saved, you can send files fine (well you should). I do not know what side effects of this there are, so be warned.

I used to have the same problem with windows messenger and the xp firewall. What I used to do is just disable the firewall when I was sending files but now I have done what Raistlin has suggested and now my file transfers work with windows messenger and the firewall on at the same time.

Sorry I didn't realize that you use dialup. The IP Address you are supposed to enter is your own, but if you are using dialup it is dynamic as you have said. I don't know what to do. I assume that all of the other 'filters' will also change (via the OS) when you dialin, maybe this one will too...so maybe when you dialin, use that IP address, and try it again when you dialup up a next time. Other than that, I don't know.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

WinMess doesn't use a standard port all the time. It uses a random port for file transfers so it wont work to leave a port open in your firewall. Basically all i do.. when i'm sending something i turn it off then back on once the transfer has started.

where ever you have "My Network places" then just right click it (on the start menu) and then it'll take you there. Just right click the connection and then choose properties and then go to the advanced tab. The other way is to go to the control panel and then find the my network places icon and double click it then do it that way too..

For those using Firewall software, You should be able to put in the correct port numbers with their coresponding IP numbers. For those using Routers which have built in firewalls. You can put in the correct port numbers. And you will be able to get File transfer only. Voice and video will not work. The router needs UpnP support. Check your hardware manufacture to see if the have a update for you on this matter. To be able to use video, Both parties must be using an XP system.

i've posted this up before. so here it is again... just copying it over from the archives. ^_^ if you pay attention to the steps... it also works for DialUp users.

here are the basics.

go to your connection's properties. select the "Advanced" tab. of course if you want to you the builtin XP firewall, make sure it's checked.

to get to the nitty gritty of your TCP/UDP ports, click on "Settings..." at the bottom of the tab.

the "Services" tab is where you get to manually configure your ports. yay. initially only standard ports are listed which you can open like "FTP Server" which is TCP 21.

to open up a port.

+click on "Add..."

+type in a description for the port under "Description of service:"

+type in your computer's name under "Name or IP address of the computer hosting this service on your network:" (you can find this under "Control Panel/System/Computer Name" and look under "Full computer name:" ... just exclude the ending period

+type in the port number you want to open under "External Port number for this service:" (they SHOULD be the same port number for External and Internal)

+finally select the port type (TCP or UDP)

+hit "OK" of course ^_^

to note: if you want to enable Windows Messenger file transfer... you need to unblock TCP port 6891. this allows one file transfer. you can unblock up to TCP port 6901 to allow for 10 simultaneous file transfers.
