sys32
I recently got my hands on an old SNES and a few games. None of it really works all that well, but I think it's because the ROM reader in the console is dirty. I mean, just looking at it you can easily tell. I was just wondering if anyone knew of some kind of a solvent that would be safe to put in the reader. I know this kind of thing can be especially tricky with electronics. Thanks for the help in advance guys. -system32
Stokkolm
They make special cleaner for electronics, I think windex has some type of electronic cleaning solution. I'm not sure if it's safe so check it out first.
+BeLGaRaTh Subscriber¹ Posted August 9, 2003 Subscriber¹ Share Posted August 9, 2003 When you say the ROM reader, do you mean the component that the ROM plugs into (under the flap) sort of like a VGA/PCI slot? If so I believe that you can clean both that and the contacts on the actual Game ROM with an indian rubber. Hope that helps.

sdkaneda
rubbing alcohol and a q-tip is all you need for that. that's rubbing alcohol, isopropyl alcohol. don't try to use some gin out of the liquor cabinet, it won't work. :p

Statikk
TV Tuner cleaner/ contact cleaner from radio shack have always done the trick for myself. I once ordered the same piece for my nes from ebay and replaced it. The console was like brand new afterwards. It was only $9.99. Maybe someone sells those parts for snes on ebay. The X-Box has now taken over playing SNES games. :D
SMeK Veteran Posted September 1, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 1, 2003 i think you should gut your SNES out and use it as a pc case :) there is a guide somewhere on the internet on how to do it :)
mistermello2
Sometimes cleaning the connector in those and other systems doesn't help and you have to replace the connector. I know because I've worked on game systems like that. There's a company called MCM Electronics on the web that you can purchace a new connector from for 10 bucks and change and it'll make your system work like new again, assuming that's the extent of the problem. If you're into electronics, you could install it yourself. I haven't worked on the SNES before so I'm not sure what's involved in replacing it. Just putting in my two cents worth. Hope it helps shed some more light on your problem. btw, the part number for the connector is 83-3150.
