I dont think you can "not install" it? Do you mean the tray icon? You have to go to control panel / sounds thingies and check the "show volume vontrol icon in tray" option

Go to the Control Panel and select the sound applet and some where is a check box for turning on the volume control in the systray. I think it is on the first tab

... all I did, was format the HDD... and install Windows XP! It was pretty much automated! I had no options to change etc.

Okay... the file is a hidden system file so make sure explorer is set to show hidden files and that Hide Protected System Files is turned OFF. Both of these can be found under Tools... Folder Options, View tab.

Once you do this, go to C:WINNTinf (presuming XP is installed on your C drive). You should be able to see the file.

Right-click on sysoc.inf and choose Open from the popup menu. In notepad look for:

MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,HIDE,7

Remove "HIDE" from the line so it looks like this:

MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,,7

Save the file.

You can remove "HIDE" from all the lines in that section which will allow you to add/remove all kinds of things you're not "supposed" to. ;)

Attached is a copy of sysoc.inf that I modified. I tested it on my XP machine and it works so it should work on yours... but you know how Windows is . :roll:

Save the file to your WINNTinf folder, rename it from sysoc.txt to sysoc.inf and try Add/Remove Components.

Always helps to attach the file, doesn't it? :cheeky:

As for no WINNT folder, you can go to where ever Windows XP installed itself (could be Windows, but I think the default is WINNT). Once you find the folder XP is in, there should be a subfolder called Inf and that's where the file sysoc.inf belongs.
