Where to Start: Web Developing?

Question

Hey guys. I am a Computer Science student that is very interested in starting to do some web developing. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to take a course here at my school for that, but I think I could handle some autodidactic learning. I have intermediate-advanced knowledge in C, C++ and Java, and I would like to learn how to develop using javascript/jquery, css and html5 but I don't really trust google when it comes to learning so I wanted to ask the experts to tell me good books or sources to begin on my journey. So can you guys help me out?

Thank you!

http://diveintohtml.com -- Only HTML5 online resource I love to reference. Namely because I also have the book by Mark Pilgrim for "HTML 5: Up and Running" which is awesome.

Other books I have:

Most of those are printed in 2010 except the last book which is from 2009 but still a great read nonetheless :).

Before you get into web developing it's best to get an idea of what you want to do with it. When I got started I had this deep desire to build a fansite around one of my favorite video games. And looking at other quality sites like that actually helped me discover what technologies I should be focusing on. For web development tutorials/training I'd trust Google. It's only matter of time before you run into trouble and Google starts providing you with answers. So, don't limit yourself just because Google does a terrible job in providing information that are useless in other fields.

Also search in YouTube for videos. Videos make learning much faster and easier (at least for me).

FYI, in the early days Web Design and Development went hand to hand. But it has changed since then. Having a general understanding of both certainly does help and if you master both more power to you. But it always helps if you focus on either development or design from the beginning.

Wrong, don't always trust google. It has good links but most of the high ranking sites are sites like w3schools which is not the *worst* resource but it is looked down upon professional developers and gurus.

As most of the developers that have heard from better developers. DO NOT link to w3schools.com. More on that here: http://w3fools.com/

If you get linked to w3schools.com it's likely that they probably visited one of the first few links on google and don't know what they're talking about (no offense)

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs

Is open and maintained by enthusiasts and web professionals around the world so you will find some of the best, accurate and up to date resources along with dos and donts. (AKA the Wikipedia of developers) Your best bet to start is there. I wish you good luck!

I ALSO HIGHLY recommend http://www.stackoverflow.com this is where I've learned so many things and you can ask about any language. People here KNOW what they're talking about, a lot of the gurus that have point me in the right direction reside here. Take a look at the questions and answers and you'll see for yourself. Do yourself a favor and bookmark both of those sites, the people and information there resides for most of the modern developers be it web or any other language you can think of. If there's any place you'd like to start, it would be in these two sites.

I'm sorry about the caps but I wish you really knew how stackoverflow changed and helped me become a better developer. I just can't stress enough. :)

Thanks everyone for their very useful answers. So far I'm learning the basics of html and css and as soon as I cover that I'll get into AJAX, and PHP. I'm building myself a cool site, and at the same time to learn this amazing set of languages.

This is a good site for web dev:

http://www.w3schools.com/

I was going to suggest this as well.

I'll be checking out some of the other sites that were suggested to the person who started the topic as I've never heard of many of them.

Do not use w3schools.com--please refer to Tekkerson's post or visit w3fools.com. The only official w3 source is w3.org. Anything else is UNOFFICIAL and may not have correct information available.
