Flash
I've searched and read some articles about this. Has anyone here on neowin had damage done to their discs when they stand their ps2 vertically? I was just about to go about buying an official sonly ps2 vertical stand to give my ps2 a finished look :)

TheDreamX
I know this from friend's, not direct knowledge. They tell me that verticaly mounting your PS2 kills the laser much faster than normal use because it has to work harder to find the disc because gravity works against it. Don't know if it's true, but I know someone who can vouch for this because his first laser died pretty quick while, after it was fixed and put down horizontally, is still working today. Just my two cents. Well, that was my first cent. The other cent is don't get a PS2, Xbox all the way. I have one and I'd buy a GameCube before I buy a PS2. darkmark327
I suppose this would also apply to horizontal PCs/vertically mounted dvd/cd rom drives? Although I don't think I can see holes being burned in the discs from this; reading lasers aren't powerful enough.
matt74441
Putting any CDROM or DVD vertically is never good for it. I'm not sure about the damage to the CD, but it certainly puts more stress on the motor and wears it out faster.
Schuyler
my ps2 wont play blue disc games if it's laying down horitonzal so I keep it vertical all the time.
Dazzla Veteran Posted August 11, 2003 Veteran Share Posted August 11, 2003 Sony made it so it can be vertical for a reason. It's not a regular optical drive, using the PS2 vertically is fine on the PS2.
amoeba
I agree with Dazzla. Sony doesn't want a bunch of their PS2s coming back to them on warranty because of a feature. If it was harmful, they wouldn't engineer it and sell it.
threetonesun
If you can get your PS 2 to work at all, consider yourself lucky. Standing up, standingdown, at a slant ... it's not gonna hurt it.
matt74441
I'm not 100% sure about this, but weren't the first few batches of PS2's shipped with a lot of defective parts?
macrosslover
ok here's what happended to me the first time i played ps2, which was the first week they came out lol. my roommate got it. well i noticed, thanks to a broke timesplitter disk :) a few things. 1. having the system start off as horizontal and then playing the game, ok 2. having the system start off as vertical and then playing the game, ok 3. having the system start off as horizontal and then playing the game and then moving the system to the vertical position while still playing the game, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unfortunately we lost timesplitters after that, just scratched the disk where it would recognize it anymore. LUTZIFER
Everyone I know with a PS2 says if they don't use the stand, and have it flat on a floor like a console should be placed, they end up overheating and shut off. And then they have to wait till the consoles cool down to use again. They say it takes no time at all to overheat that way.
Tran
I always leave it flat on the groud or desk, I never put it up vertically. Personal preference I guess.
