Spec'ing new host

Question

My site is really starting to slow down and crash a fair amount, so I'm looking at getting a new host. But, it's been a while since I've been live, so its grown since my first hosting package.

What is the best way to judge what I need?

A breakdown of what I need to run. I'd prefer a UK host.

Concurrent users: 100+ (record 350)

Members: 6000

SQL: 600MB

Disk space: 5GB

Bandwidth: 70GB

I've been told to get a cloud server, 1xCPU 2GB RAM, comes with 40GB disk space and 1TB bandwidth at around £60+VAT. Seems overkill!

Thanks for the links, I should have said, I'm after a UK host as its a UK forum. But a good price comparison.

Currently using Register1.net, got alot of good feedback from an other forum. I was on ASO and the support was useless, took a long time to reply and never gave reason for their problems etc.

I'm no good with the SQL side of it, or the configuration, so what do I need to do to the conf file?

the conf file usually called my.cnf holds lots of vars and values that can be used to optimise your server. if you are using vbulletin you can get free optimisation from their forums.

i dont know how it works for virtual but thats how it works for dedicated servers.

I'm with rapidswitch http://www.rapidswitch.com they are located in Maiden Head, near London i believe.. their support is amazing, almost instant replies, they are already secured and offer hardware firewalls for individual servers.

The value package would accomodate you no problem. you can add a secondary 160gb disk for £9 so you can do backups to that disk or just do a monthly backup to your local PC.

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend?

I need to spend what I need to spend! I've been given a price as above, so no more than that really.

To match it, your host is charging ?81 inc VAT, so more.

It seems a fair whack for a small site :s

350 concurrent users isn't an awful lot, and most well built application should manage this number fairly well. You don't mention your current platform, but have you profiled your code to see if that could be optimised first?

It wouldn't be a wasted effort.

I've got a hardly used VPS sitting about at the moment. You're more than welcome to have some use of it (those specs aren't a problem) for ?15 a month.
