My first attempt at a wireless network

Recommended Posts

I have two computers,a desktop and a laptop.I have connected them via a wireless adsl router and a wireless card in the laptop.i can connect to the internet from both but i cannot seem to access folders and files on each different computer.I have ran the setup home network wizard and named them both and also with the same login and passwords on both.In my network connections folder i do not have either computer icon in there. How is it possible to share the folders/files and printers together. Also do i activate the encryption option on just the card in the laptop,or on both?

Thanks

A bit more information might be needed. What kind of wireless are you using? 802.11b, I would assume. Next, what OS are you using on all the systems. Regarding encryption, it is either on or off. When troubleshooting keep it off. Once things are going then turn it on. That way you know the network is working.

Regarding the wirless connection, I have an ad-hoc connection setup at home between my desktop, laptop, and PDA. I do not use a router for access, I share my dial-up connection between all the users. You would have to wait for someone else to give you better advice than I can give.

When you say you named them both do you mean you named the computers the same name? You can't have 2 computers with the same name. I'm assuming that your using a workgroup too, are both computers in the same workgroup? Check those things out and see if it works then.

on some routers you have to allow the wireless card (in the laptop) access to the switch in your router. There will be a web interface to your router to do that... the hardware address of the wlan card will be needed... its usually written on the card itself.

can you ping your computers, and if so what error message is given when your try to connect to the shares.

try turning of firewalls while your trouble shoot (but disconnect from the net for safety)

if you can ping both computers its strictly not a network problem... don't fiddle with the ad-hoc mode... you sound like you have that bit set up already properly in infrastructure mode.

It sounds like the problem is to do with lame windows smb services.

does it come up with a password dialogue and not accept your password/username?
