Hum
According to research presented at this week's American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting, oral sex tops even smoking and tobacco use as the leading cause of throat cancer among Americans. According to reports from NPR and other news sources , 64 percent of all cancers in the mouth, throat, head and neck are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted disease spread through a variety of intimate contacts. HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer among women, and has also been liked to cancers of the anus, vulva, vagina and penis. Statistics from the National Cancer Institute suggest that at least five percent of all cancers diagnosed world-wide are caused by HPV. So far, scientists have identified more than 150 strands of HPVs, including both high-risk and low-risk types. About 15 high-risk strands have been linked to cancer; other strands can cause warts on the genitals and other parts of the body. NPR reported that Dr. Maura Gillson told attendees of the AAAS annual meeting that one's risk of developing HPV-related oral cancer was related to how many sexual partners he or she had performed oral sex with. Someone who has had six or more partners during his or her life time has eight times the risk of developing this type of cancer, she said. If you're not interested in being a statistic, there are measures you can take to avoid transmission of HPV and other sexually transmitted diseases. The National Cancer Institute has reported that being in a mutually-monogamous, long-term relationship with a non-infected partner can minimize the risk of an HPV infection. It is important to be aware that oral sex carries many of the same risk as other intimate acts; not only can HPV be passed on through oral sex, syphilis, herpes and hepatitis-b can all be spread through oral contact with a partner's genitals, too. Planned Parenthood , a provider of sexual health information, encourages sexually-active individuals to engage in safer-sex practices, including use of condoms during oral, vaginal and anal sex. source

I get your point though. The real problem is that I think a great deal of people are walking around with HPV and dont even know it. Guys are carriers but it doesn't really affect them. So I guess oral sex can cause cancer.

Well it does if theyre gay and also enjoy giving oral. Either way, the lesson here is...get tested and be safe even when doing oral Whats scary is the infection rates. Age (years)↓ Prevalence (%)↓ 14 to 19 24.5% 20 to 24 44.8% 25 to 29 27.4% 30 to 39 27.5% 40 to 49 25.2% 50 to 59 19.6% 14 to 59 26.8% Makes me think i need to go get my HPV Vaccination... DocM
Speaking as a health professional; every kid should get the HPV vaccine well before puberty - male or female. Period. I felt that way the day it came out, and events since have only strengthened that opinion.

The real problem is that I think a great deal of people are walking around with HPV and dont even know it. Guys are carriers but it doesn't really affect them. So I guess oral sex can cause cancer. By your logic, every person has HPV. All cigarettes have toxic chemicals, but not everybody's genitals are infected. Wow, this is Fox News. I am not surprised. The title should be "HPV Linked to Throat Cancer." There is nothing wrong with having oral sex. However, there is a problem when you have any kind of sexual contact with someone without knowing whether they have an STD. Sourced from Fox. Hey Hum, why not just start a humor sub-forum just for Fox stuff. I'm pretty sure Fox can show some study proving unclean thoughts will cause brain cancer too. Puh-leeze. Welcome to the United Jesus States of Fox Murdoch! Of course it causes brain cancer. Thinking unclean thoughts requires your brain's neurons to fire and undergo cell division. The more times your cells divide, the greater probability of error. Errors in replication of DNA can cause the cells to become oncogenic, which can lead to cancer. This is why we should stop thinking and just take in anything and everything that is fed to us. And sex is so shameful, humans should just stop reproducing altogether. Eddo89
OK, dumb title...its not Oral sex itself, its diseases Moving on... In this instance, an example is needed. The bullet is technically the killer. But you need the gun to cause the damage (unless you are extremely powerful thrower). The title is accurate to the extreme, you just have a problem with it. Do you really expect the title to be Oral sex leads to sexually transmitted disease which is linked to throat cancer. Is redundant, we know what it means. Moving on.
