Fusion
Hey everyone. In the short time that I did not have a virus scanner on my computer, I seemed to have contracted a virus. I am sorry if there are already numerous threads about this but I could not find any. It seems to be a variation of the blaster worm but not. It is called the nachi worm. Some companies have some info on how to protect against it, but no on seems to know how to get rid of it. I use the latest AVG anti-virus and the only option they give is to quarintine it, but since it is a system file that is infected, in cannot proceed with that. So, I guess I am stuck? I really don't know what there is to do now. Has anyone heard a fix for this or do I simply just need to reinstall windows. If that is the case, it has been awhile since a reformat so I would just do that, but I really don't have time for that now so if there is a fix that would be awesome. Thanx for your help guys. :(
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted September 2, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 2, 2003 What virus is it? You can try many different vendors to clean files. AVG is weak in clening files, try something ICSA certified like a symantec antivirus trial. Or you can try thier free online scanner. http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/home.as...VYRMHCGVRVRMNRY Because there's no remover for that individual virus doesn't mean one of the other AV programs can't fix it, so try several of them. Fusion
Thank you radish and macodin. the name of the virus is the nachi worm. Google it to learn more of what it is. It sounds like a version of blaster or something. I have a copy of norton I can load. Do you think that will take care of it?

Fusion
tried it and it can't repair it. Am i left to just reinstal windows?
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted September 3, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 3, 2003 Well you're left with several options. You can boot using your XP CD and try transfering the damaged files from a floppy or cd back to windows using the repair console, or you can boot from the XP CD and do a repair install, which basically reinstalls windows but leaves all you're programs and files installed. I'm not sure if the recovery console allows you to transfer files though, I know you can run chkdisk and other utils but I'm not sure if it allows you to replace files, because I just format(I'm lazy). And your last option is a full reinstall where you format and install xp again. I really think the recovery console can do it though, but I don't know any of the commands so I'd ask around, I don't think you have to format just yet. AgEnTsMiTh
I just formated my laptop today, plugged it up to the DSL modem and BAM I got 3 viruses. Either my ISP network is seriously in question of abilities, or there are some serious crap going on. What are your thoughts?

Either my ISP network is seriously in question of abilities, or there are some serious crap going on. What are your thoughts? Neither. Since you formatted you lost the RPC patch which leaves your system wide open for blaster and it's varients. Your ISP isn't required to block ports to stop viruses, although it woulda been nice if they did. The blaster and it's varients though is the worst one in my opinion, this affects all the home users unlike the virii and worms that targeted IIS, so it's not that there's more viruses out there, just that the ones that are out there can easily infect any non patched system. Fusion
Well I think that I got it figured out. I installed norton and it found the same virus only it called it something different. Apparantly different viri are called different names by different software. So, when I searched for that name I found a utility that fixes it. Hurray! So I think that it is all fixed now. I forgot to state, that I did install the patch beforhand. I have it on CD with some other tools and when the install was complete, I ran the patch, after reboot, plugged into the modem.
