How do I set this up?

Recommended Posts

Alright... I've been getting irritated with my router lately. Port forwarding isn't working anymore, and it's something I am the only one on my network uses. So what I'm trying to do is set up my computer to be in front of the router, and share the internet with the other two computers.

This is how I've got it set up.

Internet -> My PC >----[crossover cable] ----> router ---> PC + Mac + Xbox

The problem is that I can get internet, but nobody else can. I tried shutting off DHCP on the router, but that didn't work. So currently, I'm the only one that gets internet. I may replace the router, but can't do that as of right now. Any ideas?

that is the most wack network topology i have ever seen. :blink:

Why don't you have it this way, are you sharing dialup or something?

The easiest way to set this up is this:

Internet --> Router -- PC1 (192.168.1.100)

--------------------------PC2 (192.168.1.101)

--------------------------Mac (192.168.1.102)

--------------------------XBOX (192.168.1.103)

:cool:

I think the reason why the computer needs to be in front of the router is because he cannot get port forwarding to work.

Liar2:

Have you thought about using a hub to connect the Computer and the Router to the Internet connection instead of running the Internet connection through your PC?

Oh sorry. Didn't read this.

Anyway. I think you have to fix the port fowarding problem instead of thinking of a workaround. The topology xStainDx shows us is the best solution.

Which router do you got? Try a newer firmware. It may help.

using a regular cable instead of a crossover cable will let the other machines through...

Or try this. There may be a port which can be used as an uplink port on your router. If so many routers have a little switch to make this port Uplink and non-Uplink.

xStaindx the reason he put his PC in front of the router is because he said port forwarding on his router did not work.

A crossover cable should work fine as long as he can see the light on the WAN port on his router.

There are 2 easy ways to solve your problem.

1) If your router supports DMZ hosts, put your computers IP address in there as the DMZ. This will "Virtually" put your PC outside of the router, but be aware there are many security risks doing that.

2) If your router does not support DMZ hosts and it does not port forward, its time to get a new one.

Arrghhh - Amazing in this day and age, when it comes to best practices - instead of fixing the issue, people look for the work around. FIX your port forwarding problem. How about you give us some details on that?? vs puting your box outside your protection zone (ie behind the router).

What is your router model, and firmware version (DO NOT say latest - what is the version). And what are you trying to make work?? Game Server, Web, FTP, IM, sending file on IRC, etc... What is your connection, dsl or cable - and what company? Depending on your connection the ports your trying to make work - maybe be blocked by your ISP, etc..

You want details? I'll give you details. My router is a d-link DI-704 with the latest firmware. which is 2.57b3. And currently, my port forwarding won't work. I have tried to host half life games, an ftp server, emule, etc. I have charter cable, 1.5 mbps down / 128 kbps up.

Everything works when I am in front of the router just fine. But I would like to share the internet with my family. And that is something I am currently unable to do. The router has been giving me problems for the past month or so.

What do you mean that everything works when your in front of the router? You mean when you directly connect your machine to your modem?? I would take that your router is not working at all! Are you on a PPOE connection? Ie do you have to log in to access the net?

Does your router grab an IP address from your ISP, or are you setting it up static?

okay, i seem to have fixed everything. thanks for whatever help i was given.... It seems there was a faulty NIC in the other computer. I swapped it out with a spare I was just given and it worked perfectly. And I actually am now using a 16 port switch rather than a 4 port router. Although I hope to still get a new router soon.
