Atlantis Found?

(CBS) - Has the lost city of Atlantis finally been found?

A U.S.-led research team claims they have discovered the remains of what might be the mythical city in a swamp in southern Spain, according to Reuters. They theorize a massive tsunami sent the city to its watery grave thousands of years ago.

?

Of course, according to the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, Atlantis is believed to have been an island. But Freund's team recently discovered "memorial cities" in central Spain they claim were built by survivors of Atlantis in the original city's image.

"We found something that no one else has ever seen before, which gives it a layer of credibility, especially for archeology, that makes a lot more sense," Freund told Reuters.

There are, as readers will no doubt guess, a lot of "ifs" and "maybes" in the report. Critical readers may also not be surprised that this announcement precedes the premier of "Finding Atlantis," a new special on the National Geographic Channel starring Freund and his team.

It could be Atlantis or it could be (most likely) anything else. How the hell are they supposed to know for sure?

Maybe they found an: "Welcome to Atlantis, 4 interchanges, population 3000" sign?

They say that they're amazed at "the power of tsunamis" because one may have wiped out this town that was 60 miles inland. But this town is also 1000s of years old, so wouldn't that mean the coastlines were drastically different back when this town was above water? So who's to say how far the town actually was from the coast.

I wasn't really sure where to move this too: I guess archeology is a social science but with Atlantis being "discovered" several times a year in different parts of the world it's almost the stuff of conspiracy theories.

All the same this isn't back-page news material so it was moved.

Swamp != the sea.

While a great find, not Atlantis.

You're not a big follower of the myth, are you? Being in a swamp right now does not inherently mean it's not Atlantis. It could be on land now for all we know.

Wasn't it the Minoan civilization (island nation) destroyed after massive volcano hundred of miles away, attributed to the being Alantis.

They head numerous amount of murals depicting bulls, and the palace was a massive maze. The theory is being a land locked / sea trading, tsunami destroyed all the boats and did heavy damage on land and they died out very quick after that.

Also kinda like the amazon's yet evidence was in the Russian steps. Based on the graves, the females had all the "war" wounds where the males did not but as the remain got newer the the war type wounds shift the men being the warriors over time.

Either way, the news of finding an remains of ancient city state / civilization is always exciting, and look forward to what they find (even if it's not legendary lost city)
