New Console: Phantom

Recommended Posts

so whats everyone think of that new console phantom?

its a wierd one... i dont perticualy like the look or the idea of it.

for those who dont know about it

it has 100gb hard drive.. ok that sounds alot for a console, but you need to use it to store the games, there is no cd or dvd drive, you have to download the games off a broadband connection for money, games will cost between 5 - 50 american dollars, you can have a keyboard, mouse and so on for it, so basically its like a pc in a way, except its a console...

anyone else have info a bout it, please feel free to post below!

Its a fake.

There was an article about it on nvnews.net last month, the archive link is here: http://www.nvnews.net/cgi-bin/archives.cgi...ory=1&view=8-03 - click the link and do an edit -> find for phantom.

For those that can't be bothered here's what was said, After reading it, I'm sure you'll agree that its a fake:

QUOTE:

"Yes a strange news source indeed, I found this little article they had posted to be too interesting to skip however. How many of you have heard of the Phantom? A supposed games console that promises to revolutionise gaming, a bold claim especially after reading Penny Arcade. Warning: there is some course language on Penny Arcade occasionally.

It really comes down to this: is it a hoax, or are the forces involved in making this system absolutely inept? I'd call that six of one or a half dozen of the other.

Anybody tried to actually submit ther information on the pre-registration screen? It's not a button, it's just a sort vestigial nub with no function.

An interesting mail from Josh Parker, Private Eye:

In my amazing boredom, I researched the status of these trademarks on , but could find no record of either being trademarked. I tried various search methods, never did I see the slogan or the name Phantom trademarked by Infium Labs.

Steve from HardOCP dropped the following science on me yesterday:

We had a reader go by Infinium Labs and take pictures of their "facility" ( that's when we found out it was a strip mall in the Florida Keys ) only to find out it was a single desk in a 100 x 100ft room with two phones and no furniture. That was about 4 months ago.

I talked to the Tim Roberts guy on the phone when he returned my call ( 22 days after I left a message ) and when I asked him about all this...he HUNG UP ON ME. I asked him if he was looking for investors, he said "We are actively recruiting investors". I asked him if they had any consoles on hand, he said "We have several hundred prototype models here in the office". So then I asked him where the prototypes were made, he said "right here in our facility". Then I told him I had seen his 100ft x 100ft office space conveinently located next to Missing Link Art Gallery in the strip mall ( located at 5380 Gulf of Mexico Dr. Longboat Key, Fl 34228 ) and he went NUTS!!! "WHO THE HELL IS THIS!?!?! BLAH BLAH I'LL SUE YOU".

There you have it folks. I'll leave it to you to make up your own mind :)"

Hahaha! Interesting. :)

So it was a joke? :p

Anyway, even if it's true, what's the point to having a console that is a computer? Buy yourself a PC and presto!

I don't remember where I saw that, but it was a comic-strip about the Phantom saying:

- Well, it can download game, you can upgrade everything and...

- It's a computer...

- No, no, it's not.

- Does it have a CD drive?

- No.

- Well, then, it's a broken computer.

:p

I think it's a really smart idea. I would love being able to just download my games without going to a store, and allow my console to be upgradeable so I wouldn't keep spending 200-300 a year for a new console. It's insane.

It's called a PC. But upgrading usually works out to costing more than buying a new console.
