Rexy
Yesterday I got cable internet installed in my house. It works, and fast. I connected it through the ethernet port (there's no dialing or installation needed). But then I wanted to connect the cable modem to my switch so I can use the internet connection and my home network together and also share the connection (I have only one ethernet card on my comp). So I connected it. But then I can't see the client computers. If I mess with the settings a bit I can make it so I can see them but then the internet doesn't work. And if I mess with the settings again I can make the internet work but I can't see the client computers  ... And those stupid support ppl don't wanna help me because they say that it's not their problem as long as it works at least on one computer  . So what am I doing wrong? How can I fix this? Without having to use USB (because the cable outlet isn't by the server computer but near the switch). Thanks.
rezza Veteran Posted September 6, 2003 Veteran Share Posted September 6, 2003 Are you plugging the cable modem into the uplink port of the hub? if so, (well on my hub at least), you can't have anything else plugged into the port right next to the uplink one. Thats what the uplink port is for... and it takes the place of port 1 generally. anyway, I'm sure somebody here will be able to be a bit more specific. good luck. +BudMan MVC Posted September 6, 2003 MVC Share Posted September 6, 2003 Get a ROUTER! Or your going to have to buy more IP addresses.
PCKing
Most cable providers use Dynamic IP's and I beileve they will only give you 1. Youll need to get a router for this unless you can obtain more IP's from your provider...

liar2
or you can get another NIC, and then toss a crossover to the hub, and then run the other system through the hub. your best bet is still to get a router though
