0 XIII
There is no such thing as "safe"reg. cleaner. Most of these reg. cleaners can be optimized and such but the chance of thing going wrong by messing up with the registry is still there. You will be better off not touching it. 0 Raa
A registry cleaner is unnecessary. This. Do NOT use them as you run the risk of creating more problems. Vista/7 optimise the registry and there is no need to run these sorts of utilities anymore. Arkose 1 Share
0 Paul Ferson Veteran Posted April 19, 2011 Veteran Share Posted April 19, 2011 You might like to read into this thread and see what others have to say. Personally, I use CCleaner but I never use the registry cleaner feature within the program due to the fact I find it does not increase performance - and if it does, it'll be so marginal it makes no difference. If you want to try one, by all means do so, but I doubt there's any real need for one.
0 +Xinok Subscriber² Posted April 19, 2011 Subscriber² Share Posted April 19, 2011 As everybody else has said, registry cleaners won't make your computer faster. However, they can be used to fix simple problems. For example, if you uninstalled a program but it left some things behind like file associations or context menus, a registry cleaner could help you with that. Wise Registry Cleaner is a pretty safe registry cleaner, it's never caused me any trouble.
0 Growled Member Posted April 19, 2011 Member Share Posted April 19, 2011 When you go mucking about the registry you have left safe behind. However, if you decide to do this I would suggest CCleaner.
0 Burned
Before you muck around use ERUNT to create a backup of your registry. The only tools I would use are Ccleaner, and Glary Utilities, anything else will likely mess things up.
0 justlooking
I've never understood the desperate need to clean the registry. Unless there's a specific reason to get rid of a few entries, it's better left "dirty". Arkose 1 Share

0 Marshall Veteran Posted April 19, 2011 Veteran Share Posted April 19, 2011 Using Registry cleaners is a dangerous game to play. Personally, I'd rather sift throught the registry myself and manually delete the entries I know are safe to delete. Arkose 1 Share
0 Spartan Erik
You don't need one. Performance gains are minimal from registry cleaning. If you do want to remove old entries, I suggest using CCleaner.
0 yowanvista
Reg cleaners are useless on windows. They will cause more problems than they cure
0 devHead
You're better off not using Registry cleaners; my experience with them has always been a bit troubling. They will get rid of references to programs or settings that no longer exist after you've uninstalled a program, but they also remove stuff you really should keep. Once I used one and it somehow got rid of the file association for folders! You're better off without them.
0 BetaAddict
Agreed. Experience suggests the registry is best left alone unless you are modifying a very specific regkey, which can be done with regedit. Cleaning up old and unused regkeys will have no significant, if any, effect on performance.

0 devnulllore
I have, and have used in the past, CCleaner. It's Reg cleaner is not very intrusive at all. I also already have JV16 tools and I won't use the reg cleaner in that, maybe the compactor but the reg cleaner in safe mode screwed up all my drive pointers so some of my drives were missing. I restored right away and everything is ok. I will stick with CCleaner alone. Thanks,

After reading your first post I'm surprised you haven't learned your lesson and still want to use a registry cleaner. Yes but that was System Mechanic. I used that only because my dad bought it for me. I was never too keen on that program to begin with. Since I am new to Windows 7 I thought there might be a different safer cleaner out there.
