Best and safest reg cleaning tool for Windows 7

Question

Any suggestions for the best and safest reg cleaning tool for Windows 7. I tried using my System Mechanic I used on XP but it F**ked up all my drive pointers in the registry. Took 3 restores to get it right.

Thanks.

There is no such thing as "safe"reg. cleaner. Most of these reg. cleaners can be optimized and such but the chance of thing going wrong by messing up with the registry is still there. You will be better off not touching it.

A registry cleaner is unnecessary.

This.

Do NOT use them as you run the risk of creating more problems. Vista/7 optimise the registry and there is no need to run these sorts of utilities anymore.

You might like to read into this thread and see what others have to say. Personally, I use CCleaner but I never use the registry cleaner feature within the program due to the fact I find it does not increase performance - and if it does, it'll be so marginal it makes no difference. If you want to try one, by all means do so, but I doubt there's any real need for one.

As everybody else has said, registry cleaners won't make your computer faster. However, they can be used to fix simple problems. For example, if you uninstalled a program but it left some things behind like file associations or context menus, a registry cleaner could help you with that.

Wise Registry Cleaner is a pretty safe registry cleaner, it's never caused me any trouble.

Before you muck around use ERUNT to create a backup of your registry.

The only tools I would use are Ccleaner, and Glary Utilities, anything else will likely mess things up.

Using Registry cleaners is a dangerous game to play.

Personally, I'd rather sift throught the registry myself and manually delete the entries I know are safe to delete.

You're better off not using Registry cleaners; my experience with them has always been a bit troubling. They will get rid of references to programs or settings that no longer exist after you've uninstalled a program, but they also remove stuff you really should keep. Once I used one and it somehow got rid of the file association for folders! You're better off without them.

Agreed. Experience suggests the registry is best left alone unless you are modifying a very specific regkey, which can be done with regedit. Cleaning up old and unused regkeys will have no significant, if any, effect on performance.

None. they have been proven to not do anything helpful. in fact they could do the opposite.

I have, and have used in the past, CCleaner. It's Reg cleaner is not very intrusive at all. I also already have JV16 tools and I won't use the reg cleaner in that, maybe the compactor but the reg cleaner in safe mode screwed up all my drive pointers so some of my drives were missing. I restored right away and everything is ok. I will stick with CCleaner alone.

Thanks,

The safest registry cleaner, is not to use one at all.

After reading your first post I'm surprised you haven't learned your lesson and still want to use a registry cleaner.

Yes but that was System Mechanic. I used that only because my dad bought it for me. I was never too keen on that program to begin with. Since I am new to Windows 7 I thought there might be a different safer cleaner out there.

Thanks,
